Re: Buckle mishap-Will leather do?
I have seen leather straps used with older kilts. How old, I don't know, but certainly in the tens of years. Kinloch Anderson used to use leather straps embossed with 'KA' in monogram and Celtic motif surrounding. I seem to remember that the leather holding the buckle was wider, or flared out wider (can't remember which) to show the words Kinloch above and Anderson below. That was, of course, the time when their buckles were cast and had the words Kinlock Anderson stamped on.
I have noticed that leather straps are being used by a variety of kiltmakers, but usually, at the moment, at the lower end of the market.
So, once at the top, now creeping back up?
Regards
Chas

Re: Buckle mishap-Will leather do?
I use leather on my kilts for the buckles. It's a lot quicker to move and looks great. Don't be over concerned with what is "traditional". "Traditional" is whatever the "expert" believes. If we are to wear kilts as a normal part of our clothing then they will evolve and perhaps this is one of the many directions.

VERY heavy stuff-woven for HM government.
I can send cut outs if it will help.

Re: Buckle mishap-Will leather do?
TARTAN TESS-YES, YES, YES Tartan Tess-Thats the stuff. If you could help me out I will just love you forever. I personally was starting to think that leather buckle straps might give a new edge (I may investigate this further), but alas, I got a strange look from the person who's kilt it is when I informed him. He said OK, but I could tell it stuttered his brain. Matt's right, they aren't really noticeable anyway, but I think the standard has been sett for tradition at the moment, so any deviation is like rocking the boat. Tartan Tess-PM sent.

As far as I can tell NOTHING changes without the boat getting rocked. When I was in the military (all those years) I learned that standards were something that most people lived down to. I'm not interested in that. As it is, if you are wearing a kilt you are rocking the boat—rock on!
