Re: Marton Mills - I've just ordered some tartan from them, but I only noticed solid black on their website. The grey shadow has an underlying (jacquard?) check to it. Am I missing something? I'm going to check out Dalgliesh. Thank you all!

Yes you are missing something. Marton Mills also weaves a line of Cavalry Twill (which has miniscule lycra content) and various 2/2 twills in different weights.

I have a price list which delineates which ranges are which but most of their solid cloth is not featured on their website which means you have to call and ask about getting swatches.

    Ask about

    Follifoot (2/2 twill 13-14 oz)
Skipton range (cavalry twill approx 14-15 oz)
Woodhead range (cavalry twill approx 18oz)

You can get solid colour cloth woven by Dalgliesh just like tartan or Marton Mills also sells it.

Pendleton carries the hard-finish worsted twills, just like the Scottish tartan I have purchased, in solids as well as tartans. I have purchased this sort of twill in their mill store in Camas, Washington, many times.

Melton cloth is what is used for coats, like the old-fashioned Navy pea jackets. It is woven, then felted so that it is water-resistant. Pendleton has the Melton cloth, but that is certainly not all they offer.

The original poster would do well to ask for some swatches if he has any doubt about the fabric.
