Re: do ladies wear kilt pins?
Kilted skirts were quite a big deal many years ago in the Dark Ages when I was very young. I don't think I ever saw a girl wearing one (you know, the ones that were fairly long and wrapped right-over-left instead of the man's kilt way of left-over-right) who didn't have one of those safety pin type kilt pins.
It wasn't until I was a grown man that I learned it was patterned after the Gordons' standard kilt pin. Ha. Art immitating life.
I had hears years ago that kilt pins were added to the Regiments' uniform in defference to Queen Victoria, but the troopers would only pin it through the outter apron for obvious reasons, not the least of which it that pinning both together endangers tearing of fabric and--most important--affects the sway of the kilt!

Re: do ladies wear kilt pins?
My mother always wore what I now know is called a blanket pin in her kilt / skirt. She, of course, never wore anything as short as a proper kilt. The women in our band wear pins on their kilts as do some of the gents.

I would caution you against wearing the pin close to the hem of your skirt, Maghan. It seems to me that it woud knock around and either be damaged or damage other things. If you pinned it at about mid-thigh, though, that could look really smart, as Jock would say.

Yes! You don't have to but I think they look nicer. Here's mine

Re: do ladies wear kilt pins?
Has anyone considered replacing the Pin part of the kilt pin with rare earth magnets? That way the pin could still be worn, but it wouldn't damage the fabric and that type of magnet is strong enough to hold through normal wear and then some.
I wouldn't consider altering an heirloom or antique pin or brooch, but on newer pieces it might be an option. I have several name badges and decorative pins that are attached in this manner. They don't come loose and do no harm to the fabric.

Re: do ladies wear kilt pins?
Of course! After all, kilt pins are simply brooches.
Cheers,

Re: do ladies wear kilt pins?
As a girl I wore kilts, and had one of the simple blanket pins - when I first wore it my mother pinned it horizontally at hem level, through both layers, and I knelt on it, it came open and then stabbed me.
That is probably why I have never worn a pin since taking up wearing kilts these last few years, now I think about it.
If the pin is something heavy, delicate or precious I would add my 'vote' for wearing it well above the knee , as it can really hurt to get hit on the kneecap if you need to run, and it could also be detremental to the pin to be hitting against furniture etc. if you were to spin around sharply.
