Re: First attempt to make a kilt - Czech National

    Hi all,

thanks for your compliments, it means a lot for me to know you oppinion. Many thanks also to CDNSushi for posting the colours explanation - I love our national tatran for its coulours and its story (it was created by Vaclav Rout, the piper, orginizer of Highlang Games and the head of the Friends of Scotland in the Czech Republic).

To New World Czech: The tartan is heavyweight (8 yd, 16oz) wool, woven in Scotland, but I don´t know exactly the name of the mill, complete sett size is 21 cm (ca 8.3 inches). I tried to pleat to stripe but almost everybody here advised me to pleat to sett and I think it was very good advice.

Congrats on your first attempt Jiri, it looks fantastic. I also make my own kilts and am currently working on my third kilt in the Norwegian Centennial tartan. It may be that your tartan is woven at the same mill as my Norwegian Centennial, C.D. Dalgleish.

That is a really good job. I don't know much about kilt construction but I would say it looks seriously like you have good technique there. Have you seen Barbara Tewksbury's book? It is pretty widely available. It has a lot of information on different ways to pleat and how they are constructed. I have skimmed it but not ever tried what you have done.

    GOOD WORK!

That looks amazing!! And I also like that tartan. Great colours! And I like the way the saltire goes so well with the kilt.

Really nice work. That is gorgeous. My wife wants one now (she's part Czech) and I wouldn't mind having one myself.

Thanks for sharing your work...it is a very nice kilt and you should be very proud to wear for both your country and yourself.

I really like the tartan, but the more I think about it, the more I think that when I do finally get the chance to have a kilt made in this tartan, (seeing that it would be a custom weave job regardless), I would like to see it in either a 'muted' or 'ancient'.

Re: First attempt to make a kilt - Czech National

Hi again, I´d like to say that it is really nice to read your oppinions and .

To Tulloch: Unfortunatelly, I did not read Barbara Tewksbury's book. Nevertheless, I think I read almost whole forum about kilt construction here :-) BUT, I found one HUGE mistake I made :-( I switched the direction of the fabric - as you can see on the pictures, threads in the fabric goes upwards from left to right and according to the pics of Barbara Tewksbury's kilts it should be oposite :-( Hope you will not lynch me now!!!

To CDNSushi: I can´t imagine 'ancient' or 'muted' version, I like it as it is - I like the bright colours :-)

Finally, I decided to 'bother' you with other pictures - me kilted for a metal show (and also smiling .-)

Slainte, Cheers, Skål, Kampai, Na zdravi!!!

Looking good! I really like the drinking horn. I am going to have to get one of those.
