I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Re: Lost a Thread????? check Kilt Advice
I posted to that thread, which has been moved to Kilt Advice.
I hope that Jock Scot sees it and maybe clues us in on Scottish practices. If I recall correctly, they were wearing kilts in THE QUEEN while stalking. I gather stalking differs that much from shooting in that I believe someone has already observed that nobody wears kilts shooting...

Tartan kilts(any kilt) are almost never worn out on the hill deer stalking, or for woodland stalking, these days. A few kilts, a very few, will be seen early in the grouse season on the moor where barbed wire and midges are absent, but for bird shooting in general tweed plus 4's/2's/breeks are the preferred option. I do wear a waxed cotton "over kilt" over my tweed plus 4's, instead of water proof over trousers, should the weather require it and a much better, by far, option it is.

A traditional three piece tweed shooting suit.

absolutely smashing, though to tell you the truth, I never would have thought of such an outfit for hunting (or shooting as it is called on your side of the pond). A bit off topic, but do you have a closer shot of that cap? I'd love to see the fabric up close.

Zirro.
Here you go---the cap.
You may notice that the tweed of the cap does not match the tweed of the suit. Just so you know, it is usual for only the Estate staff to wear ALL matching tweed.

My tailor in Belfast was quite adamant about not sending a bit of Tweed to Bates until I explained that it was for a motoring cap... not something to be worn out shooting.
