Re: Need help finding the correct tartan, please.

All I have to say is "Wow!" Thanks for the responses. I had actually forgotten I'd posted here until I accidentally was linked here via Google on a semi-related search.

I was of the mind that it really didn't matter too much if I wore a tartan that wasn't of my "clan" but I did want my first non-UK to be somewhat researched and chosen for more than "that looks good."

Thank you all for the tips and info and links. I think I will be going with the Glasgow one for starts and see where the wind blows me from there.

Re: Need help finding the correct tartan, please.

I recommend you read the book, "Tartan For Me" by Dr. Philip D. Smith (along with others, of course). The Ninth Edition lists Rodger, Rodgers, Roger, Rogers, Rogerson, and even MacRogers.

All but the last are associated with district tartans (Angus, Roxburgh, and Aberdeen), while MacRogers is associated with clans MacLaren and MacRory.

The authenticity of these associations can be (and almost certainly are) debated. In his book, Dr. Smith writes, "The identification of tartan with territory or place may be more ancient than its association with clan or family."

So, it might be more "authentic" for you to choose one of the district tartans. But, please do not take my word for that. Continue your research until you feel comfortable with a decision you make about what tartan you choose to wear.

    And, good luck ...
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Re: Need help finding the correct tartan, please.

Jumping in a little late on this one. The following is from the Surnames Database
This is a surname of English and sometimes Scottish, medieval origins. It is a patronymic form of Roger, which itself is of Norman-French origin, but from a Germanic personal name originally "Rodger". Composed of the elements "hrod", meaning renown, and gari, a spear, it was introduced into England by the Normans after the Conquest of 1066. It reinforced the similar existing pre 7th century Anglo-Saxon name "Hrothgar", the earliest reference to which is in "Beowulf", the epic poem of the Dark Ages. In England the name became very popular, as were its pet forms of Hodge and Dodge. The personal name was first recorded as "Rogerus" in the Domesday Book of 1086, whilst the surname itself is first recorded in the mid 13th Century (see below). Early examples of the surname recording include: William Rogger in the Subsidy Tax Rolls of the county of Sussex in 1296, whilst Henry Rogeres was recorded in the similar rolls, but for Worcestershire in 1327. Other early interesting recordings include Nathaniel Rogers (1598 - 1655), educated at Cambridge University in England, and his son John (1630 - 1684), who emigrated to the New England colony of Virginia in 1636. John Rogers became the president of Harvard University in 1682. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Richard Roger. This was dated 1263, in the "Archaeological Records" of the county of Kent, during the reign of King Henry 111 of England,1216 - 1272.

    Oddly the 1881 Census shows the name Rogers as predominantly in Wales;

But I would agree that a district tartan is in order on this one.

I am perusing the districts as well and had family associated with the Galloway district and found out that they have made it a clan.
I purchased the tartan direct and made a sash...baby steps here for me.
Here is a link to a discussion of the Galloway Clan at rootsweb for what it is worth.

    Here is a snippet.
There is controversery over many of the Clans.
However, in this case of the Clan Galloway, there
is a couple of pretty significant points.

    as existing.
