Re: Skunk Fur Dress Sporran
I used to know a fellow in North Carolina that made them before I saw any anywhere else. He claimed it was designed for the chief of Clan MacPew.
All of the ones I've seen looked good, and I'd love to have a full mask if I had a need for a new one. May find a need some day. The contrasted colors make for an interesting look, and the fur does have a nice feel. I rather like the brown-and-white ones I've seen. Unlike other full mask sporrans, the black-and-white tend to look very formal to me.

Re: Skunk Fur Dress Sporran
I have a skunk fur sporran from Fergusson Britt it really is a wonderful piece of kit. I admit I've worn it more for day wear than anything else. If you are interested in these things, J. Charles Thompson says the following in "So You're going to wear the kilt!" pg 72 in the 3rd edition:
"I suggested that a skunk-skin sporran, with it's black and white, would look well with the black and silver of Scottish evening dress." He goes on to say that a taxidermist in Nova Scotia has taken him up on it and now skunk skin sporrans are now readily available."
For me Thompson is not the be all end all, however his views are a good place to start.

Re: Skunk Fur Dress Sporran
I heartily endorse skunk fur for sporrans. It's thick and rich with a sleekness that keeps it from being too bushy.
I love using it, as the black/chocolate & white contrast looks great, and the defined stripes give real direction to an otherwise very dark pelt.
The only thing I don't like about skunk is the undercoat. It's VERY fine and gets into the sewing and also floats around the room when you trim/cut the hide.

Well, I live in Tennessee and we have a lot of skunks around these parts, for sure. Open season on the little varmin year around. I like the looks of the skunk fur sporrans that I've seen. Kinda high dollar too.
So what to you all think about them?
"Nice fur?"
Or,
"Hey Dude, you got a dead skunk in your lap."
Given the price, I'd go for a more traditional Highland fur: Otter, wildcat, badger, pine marten, etc.

Considering that skunks are in abundance, and some of those other species are not, the skunk is the ecologically considerate and wisest choice.

Well, thanks to everyone for their input. I really expected a more even split on opinions. Great to hear almost everyone likes them.
I will most definitely put this on my list of things to do.
G'day all.

Re: Skunk Fur Dress Sporran
Love the full mask skunk sporrans. Have had one on the Christmas wish list for a couple of years now. I finally found one at a vendor at the North Texas Irish Festival and showed it the wife. I got the distinct impression that the only way I was going to get one was to kill and skin it myself. She wasn't impressed.
