Re: Tweed Jackets for Gentlemen of Substance
Thanks for the suggestions, it would be very useful if more US companies could be added to the list so that my fellow GOS in the States could also benefit from this research. I suggest the limit is $400 as this roughly equates to £250 which is a reasonable amount to pay for a jacket.
If anyone from any other country knows of suppliers of non standard stock sizes in their own country it would be most welcome to be added to the list.

Here is a 56" chest green jacket and vest in the 'sale' for £135 at MacLeod Highland Supplies in Glasgow. A bargain.

One thing that puts me off to many of the out of country sellers is I have no idea what to expect to pay for VAT. This thread is a great resource for us GoS. I think the USAK tweed jacket and waistcoat is how I'm going to ultimately go.

Re: Tweed Jackets for Gentlemen of Substance
Why not take the worry out of sizing? Arm length vs. waist et.al.??
I had my jackets made to measure through Lochcarron. Did it through my kiltmaker rather than a middleman - though in this case she was sort of a middleman. Actually more an advisor and a contact to place the order for me to my specific measurements. Not sure if Lochcarron still does that though - heard they may not now. But check it out, and maybe House of Edgar.
Highly recommend you contact your kiltmaker, or find one, and have your jacket(s) custom sewn to your size rather than off the rack. Be VERY VERY careful when dealing with middlemen/jobbers on something they're just gonna get for you somewhere.

You would not expect to pay VAT. You would expect to pay import duty in your own country
Take the example of the jacket Eck mentioned from Glasgow. The sale price is £135 and that presumably includes VAT which you would not have to pay. To remove the value of the VAT simply divide 135 by 1.2 and you are left with a basic price of £112.00. Convert that to US dollars and at today's exchange rates that jacket will cost you $177.70
All you then need to do is add the cost of postage and finally check with your own customs and excise how they determine the duty you would pay. Yes, it's a bit of an uncertain game but it is possible to work things out reasonably accurately. Usually customs is payable on the value of the freight charge and often a carrier will add maybe $20 or so for a handling fee
However, if you purchase a jacket made in the UK from a highland outfitter in your own country it will probably cost less because for the retailer things are done slightly differently. It's a similar principle but because the sums are less complex (well, maybe not) you will probably save a few dollars and have less aggro with no uncertainty about the final cost
Don't be afraid of buying from overseas but avoid it if you can

Re: Tweed Jackets for Gentlemen of Substance
Dug out my records from my Lochcarron jacket days four years ago. There's an email addy for retail orders retail enquiries@lochcarron.com with a phone number of
+44(0)1750 726100
They made the jacket using my collar to waist measurement, Centre to wristbone measurement, chest, and waist.
Can't beat going direct for quality service and correct size.
And, the ladies at Lochcarron retail sent me swatches of cloth to choose from at no charge....

Re: Tweed Jackets for Gentlemen of Substance
Although I think this thread is intended to create a list of vendors who will have jackets over time I did come across a couple of good ebay leads. Sorry about the cut and paste links, I don't know how to post photos directly from ebay...yet
The first one is available now for those who might have an immediate need/want
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Green-tweed-...item20bf1ac253
This one looks to be a regular seller with a good record who has a few different colors/patterns available.

I hope these are helpful.
