Re: Bow Ties
I only have 2 black bow ties. One silk self tie and one pre-tied. I only wear a bow tie with my black argyle for more formal accasions. I don't think my lovat blue tweed jacket and 5 button vest would go well with a bow tie. I could be wrong though given a suitable colour.

Re: Bow Ties
I'm in the camp who only wears a bowie for really formal occasions. I wouldn't mind wearing one regularly to work, etc., but it just isn't done here where I live. A man wearing a bowtie non-formally would be teased mercilessly and sniggered at openly. Of course, that happens when wearing a kilt too...

Re: Bow Ties
I have worn a bow tie for many years. It started when I was in medical school and we had to wear ties and coats to class. A bow tie met the requirements and was never in the way in the laboratory. Now I wear them about half the time a tie is needed and always one I tie myself. They last for years - it is hard to spill things on them.

That's a shame, Henry. Like Mael Coluim, I see no reason to limit oneself to long ties when wearing a kilt. It may make you seem a bit eccentric, but you're already wearing something a bit out of the ordinary!
I generally wear bow ties only with waistcoats (or a cummerbund, if wearing a tuxedo) because it helps to fill the expanse of plain shirt that a bow tie leaves between my collar and my waist.

Re: Bow Ties
I wear a bow tie perhaps 80% of the time I wear a tie. I've done so since I was in college. Funny thing, though, I rarely wear them with the kilt, except for formal events.
I have 30 or 40 bow ties. Yesterday I wore a bright red with white polka dots bow tie. I looked quite dashing, I was told!

Re: Bow Ties
I rarely wear a necktie as it is, but a bowtie is for black tie only for me.
Outside of black tie events or Highland games, I can honestly say that I don't think that I have ever seen anybody actually wearing one in person.

Re: Bow Ties
I wore bow ties a lot in the 1970's; they were very large and made from outrageous fabrics, but they were stylish. For some reason, I stopped wearing bow ties, except with formal wear. I am seeing more self tie bow ties in the stores, but now that I am retired, I rarely wear a tie, except with formal wear.

Re: Bow Ties
I have a few bow ties - most of them "non-formal" - all self tie. I have only two formal ones. I can't get past the association of a pre-tied tie with a little boys school uniform or "Sunday Best" outfit. Bow ties have been in fashion for the past year and half or so, (was a good excuse to add a couple to the arsenal) although I think they have always been in style. The most curious thing anyone ever said to me about a bow tie came from a co-worker at an old job many years ago. She was from Ireland and she said "it's said that you shouldn't trust a man who wears a 'dickie bow'." She never told me why (or I can't remember.) Interestingly, I only wear a bow tie with a kilt if I'm going formal.

Re: Bow Ties
I bow to you gentlemen who profess to be able to easily tie a bow. I struggle mightily every time I want to wear one. I just can't remember from one wearing to the next how I did it.
