They don't specify the logistics of that from what I've seen and that would take upwards of 2 years.
One may petition for both in the same prayer. For example, here is the text:
MAY IT THEREFORE please your Lordship to Authorise the Lyon Clerk to prepare Letters Patent granting unto the Petitioner's said great great grandfather and his descendants such Ensigns Armorial as your Lordship may find suitable and according to the Laws of Arms, and may it further please Your Lordship to Grant Warrant to Lyon Clerk to matriculate of new in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland in name of the Petitioner the foresaid Ensigns Armorial with a suitable difference.
AND your Petitioner will ever pray.

Re: A grant in honor and matriculation
Have you checked with Lyon Clerk about the Exchequer Fees for a combined grant/matriculation? There always was a "special" price for this.

If you have not yet been in contact with Lyon Clerk, I would suggest you do so before petitioning. She will make the whole process go much smoother and will answer all the questions you might have.

Please do keep us posted on the process. I'd very much like to persue this as well, but first I must return to my genealogy research before proceeding.

Re: A grant in honor and matriculation
I was lucky that all my documents except for ggreat grandfather's were in neighboring towns so research and copies were easy to get. I was surprised that his birth record came from edinburgh 14 day after I mailed the request.

Re: A grant in honor and matriculation
piperdbh,
I don't have a definate design yet but what I'm leaning towards would be a variation of a traditional Duncan arms. The upper portion very much like John Duncan's arms in his avatar. below the chevron I was thinking a green field with some sort of oak leaves/acorns. This would represent my duncan heritage in the upper and the oak for me represents connecticut (oak is our state tree), where my ancestors from Scotland settled.

BluesCelt,
Could you tell us what the arms are, or at least a good description? I know very little about heraldry, but I like to look at the pictures.
