Re: Who has Kerr tartans in stock?
Hmm, i was under the assumption that there wasn't a lower priced kerr material, that it only came in wool.
But today i stumbled upon this
http://www.ebay.com/itm/KILTS-WOODTE...#ht_1600wt_670
They seem to offer an acrylic wool in kerr... thoughts?

Man, this screams of a rip off. The shape of the kilts pictured is weird - they are not modeled on a human. There are no pleat shots - God knows what is back there! And, as Paul pointed out there is no such thing as "acrylic wool." That inane statement shows you're dealing with a know nothing just looking for suckers.
My guess is whatever clan name you searched for it'd turn up on this website. Some vendors actually lie about their tartans and use the same tartan for many clans when talking to newbies.
You can have any two of price, service, and quality.
If you can afford to take the risk then go for it and learn.
Keep in mind the hand sewn wool kilts were intended for rough wear by the olde Scots who wore them.
Let the buyer beware. On EBay and overseas let the buyer be extra extra aware....

I can't argue with the advice that you don't get a quality kilt for a low price. To get an 8 yard pure wool kilt in your tartan it will cost $500 to $700 . A wool "casual kIlt" (with less yardage) will cost at least $300. If you want something to play around it, I'd choose an imitation wool, especially if you can get it in the Kerr tartan. The purchases I have made through eBay have worked out very well. If you get more serious about kilt wearing you can always go for something really nice.

Re: Who has Kerr tartans in stock?
If you're paying over $500 to $550 for a hand sewn wool 8 yard kilt you're dealing with a middleman. Find a quality kiltmaker and deal direct. Many have two payment plans too - half with the order, half when the kilt is done. Lets them buy the fabric from the mill and lets us be able to afford the kilt by saving up for the second payment while we're waiting our turn.

Not necessarily, Ron. I would hate for anyone to be left with the impression that if they are being charged anything over $550 they are paying too much, or worse yet, being misled or ripped off.
Tartan cloth comes at various price points, depending on which mill weaves it, what weight, what range, and whether or not it is a stock tartan or has to be custom woven.
To use an example of a kiltmaker other than myself, Barb T charges $350 for her kiltmaking services, plus the cost of the fabric itself. And if that fabric is a custom weave from D. C. Dalgliesh, heavy weight, then your 8 yard kilt will end up costing over $700, easily.
Now, I charge a little bit less for kiltmaking than Barb does, and I don't use as much fabric in my kilts. But even a 6 yard kilt from me, in the same D. C. Dalgliesh custom weave, would be $595.
Now, one could easily pay less than this if they were having their kilt made in a stock tartan (like Kerr normally is, to bring us back to the original question in this thread). But my point is that there is a range of costs involved in making a kilt, and even if you are dealing directly with the kilt maker, depending on what your requirements are, your kilt could easily end up costing more than the $500 to $550 you mention.

Hey, Four, I'd be wary of the kilts at the other end of the link you have in your box. Those guys sell bagpipes and guess what they cost - $49. Pakistani junk. Like I said, Buyer, Beware.

Re: Who has Kerr tartans in stock?
Also, Four, who ever heard of a "cotton lined kilt"? No one that I am aware of. Mine are wool thfough and through. Smacks of "Oh crap, it disintegrated upon first washing." Lower end kilts made by reputable companies use polyviscose, which is a good "daily wear" cloth. Be very careful, Four. Out.
