Re: Drunk Scotsman
Believe it or not John Denver did a version of it and sang it at concerts. I have it on my MP3

He was a dark horse, that one. He also used to sing a great version of one of my favourites "The Mountains of Mourne", a comic song about an Irishman in London. That was by the great Percy French, who was a rare bird, a Southern Irish protestant.

Re: Drunk Scotsman
Sigh. OK, once again for the newcomers...
The song is correctly "The Scotsman", written (and copyright) in the mid-1970s by my good friend Mike Cross of North Carolina. Mike is a mad fiddler, a tremendous storyteller and a damn fine performer on 6- and 12-string guitar. He has a website with sample MP3s for those interested. I highly recommend his performances.
Actually, the link in this thread actually sounds as if it might be Mike singing, perhaps recorded at a festival or copied from an in-concert recording.
I've heard so many bad/ wrong/ or phony versions and attributions for this song...it is not "traditional" nor "anon" nor "translated from the ancient celtic."
On this site we strive hard for accuracy in all things Scottish, from kilts to heraldry to steam engines. It's a great song, and Mike loves to hear others play and sing it. But let's try to get the title right and also credit the writer.
'K?thanksBye.

Re: Drunk Scotsman
I was at a bull and oyster feed that had a live bluegrass band playing. Well, me and my kilt were just standing there and low and behold the band stopped to take a breaak and the lead sing launched into the song. I just kind of stood there until he was finished and bowed in his direction. All evening long I had women coming up to me asking if it was true. I said , "Yes, but you had better have a blue ribbon to see."

Mod Hat Off.
I have seen this link before and have already given this the thumbs down button on youtube.
From a Scottish perspective, as I see it idiots like this singing stupid songs stereotype the kilted Scotsman and give us all a bad name, making us the butt of their jokes.
Many of us in Scotland do not drink alcohol and most Scots rarely if ever get drunk and we most certainly do not go around exposing ourselves such that young ladies would ever have the opportunity to tie ribbons on our private parts.
I do not find this in the slightest bit funny.
In my opinion this song is racist and offensive.
Mr. Cross makes me very cross. I wonder how he would feel if us Scots started publishing rude songs about daft North Carolinian songwriters.

Re: Drunk Scotsman
Well cessna152towser,
I apologize if this has given you offense, it wasn't meant to. I haven't had a drink in over 20 years myself, but I thought it was humurous nonetheless.
I try not to get to ruffled up over too much and this was something that I thought was funny. I respect your opinion about even so.
Merry Christmas!!
I hope that doesn't offend somebody here!!
Cheers!
