They aren't perfect but they're good enough.

11:00 pm, finished the join. Now it's time for the fun part, the hem. I can't wait. It totally sucks stitching the hem.

    Looking great!

I assume that by "totally sucks stitching the hem" that you're not machine sewing it?

Long, straight runs of stitching are where a machine excels!!

MT4Runner: I hate sewing the herringbone stitch but I feel it yields a hem that is superior to any machine stitched blind hem. This is just my opinion. I tried to stitch it without basting. It didn't take long to change my mind. I finished the basting and about 8 inches of the the hem tonight. I wish I had another 3 day weekend to get more work done.

    Re: DIY attempt number 5

That's looking pretty darn good so far. I bought a kilt from Rocky in that tartan about a year and a half ago and it's one of my favorites. Excellent choice.

Mine has a nice selvedge...I assumed that all MM tartan did. Too bad it doesn't. That's a lot of hemming. You have much more patience and ambition than I!

I actually have another piece that does indeed have a selvedge. I'm saving it for when I decide to tackle a military box pleat. It will be pleated to the double yellow on black but that is still quite some time away.
