    In the past, I thought I had read a discussion here about wearing a tartan bow tie with a matching kilt. While it has been done, the impression I had was that it was being discouraged by some who seemed to know more about this than I.

    A black bow tie will go about anywhere. My clan tartan has a grey background and, I think, looks good with my grey PC. Although I have a tartan bow tie, I decided to wear a black one. Perhaps one can have too much matching.

    Quite right, and I also agree with Sandy - get a bow tie you can tie yourself. They always tend to look much smarter than pre-tied bow ties.
