Re: What whiskey for Burns Supper?
If economy is the rule then I really like Speyburn for the price. Glenfiddich is always a good choice and acceptable by most levels of drinkers. I really like Springbank and Talisker if you start moving to a little more specialized taste.
Have fun!!!

I think you're going for the $30.00 and below price range, which includes some good choices. I've tried the Lismore and was unimpressed. Spend a few dollars more and get the Tomatin 12 year old. For around $25.00, it's a very nice single-malt without the "peatiness" that might turn off newcomers to Scotch.

Ahh I knew I forgot one!
Tomatin 12 is great, albeit a bit "hot" compared to some others. I like it, but I tend to put a drop of spring water in it.
I have MJ's 4th Edition "Complete Guide to Scotch Whisky" so whatever you select, I can cross-reference and let you know how well it scored.
Have fun and throw far. In that order, too. - o1d_dude

Re: What whiskey for Burns Supper?
Difficult one... as most malts are very much a personal taste. I would try and pick one that is kinder on the palette and not too smokey or peaty...Glengoyne is a good choice (for those of you who've not tried this one try it....), possibly Glenlivet, Glenfiddich is quite well known....

I remember the Lismore you shared with my friends and me. A very nice, widely appealing malt for an astounding price! Has a good chance of hitting a wide variety of tastes.

Macallan 12 will suit the taste of the ladies as well as the gentlemen. It's smooth and a little sweet from ther sherry cask aging.

Thanks for the replies. I'm writing them down with the short descriptions you've provided and will be making a trip to the local store today or tomorrow. See what they have on the shelf and what they can order by the 28th of January.
Speaking of knowing the tastes of my guests, I have no idea. I simply looked for XMarks members in my area and sent PM invites. A few accepted, so off we go. If you know where Garrettsville, Ohio is and are close enough, drop me a PM and we'll add to the rabble.

I had forgotten the Tomatin. That is also a good value malt. Still like my Lismore for an inexpensive everyday malt or one to share at the games. Most everyone around here seems to like it and come back for more.

Re: What whiskey for Burns Supper?
Even if, and perhaps especially if, some of your guests are whisky aficionados, they will likely appreciate a good, simple "gravy" for their haggis. Some of these (in the $20 - $30 range) have been mentioned already, but ones that come to my mind include ...
Cairnleigh (an excellent blended malt)
Speyburn 10, or their very good "Bradan Orach"
Lismore
Sheep Dip (a very nice "malty" blend)
Trader Joe's 10 year old single malt
Famous Grouse (a good, sweet blend)
Glenfiddich 12 (a bit peaty for my taste)
Glenlivet 12
Tomatin 12 (also a bit peaty for me)
Good luck and have a great time.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Re: What whiskey for Burns Supper?
Just picked up a bottle of 10 year old Laphroaig today before I went to work. The off the shelf choces were either stuff that wasn't on the "recommended" list or way above what I was willing to spend on a bottle of scotch. Saw several bottle priced over $100. I figure $40 aught to get me a decent dram out of it.
Should be a new experience for me. I don't drink often anymore, but even when i did and when I do ocassionally now, it's always been familiar ground, traditional american whiskey like Walker or Jack Daniels. Unless you count the stuff I get from my family. We call it "Last Run". as in "Uncle Allen says this is is last run on the still". A bit harsh on the palate, though!
