Re: Carry On Up The Khyber

I was brought up with Carry On films and love them but they are not really a cultural high tide mark. Carry On Up The Khyber does rather stand out and is apparently regarded as one of the best British comedy films.
I was in India last February. People carried round metal containers to work containing their lunch, known as tiffin.
The gag about the British being "used to cuts" has stood the test of time.

    Lowbrow humor?

I'll have to research these and give my verdict. Of course, this may take a while. If I like the first one I see, I'll binge on the rest!

Try Carry on Camping as a more typical representation of the theme.

Re: Carry On Up The Khyber

I think Carry on up the Khyber was recently voted the best of all the Carry On films. Classic comedy with Sid James and Joan Sims as Sidney Rough-Diamond and Lady Rough-Diamond. Was not Peter Butterworth hilarious at the dinner table while the garrison was under attack?- 'They're all mad'
Is there a better film that emphasises the power of the 'devil in skirts' allowing for the fact the film was of the comedy genre?
Apparently the film was made in Wales with some mountain pass doubling as the Khyber Pass

The 3rd (Foot and Mouth) do both Carry On recreations and period recreations in the UK. Lots of kilted fun to be had.

Re: Carry On Up The Khyber

For those of our UK members wanting the "first-hand" experience of the "Devils in Skirts", there is now a reenacting/living history unit of the 3rd Foot-in-Mouth:

Besides "...up the Khyber", I've always liked "Carry on Sergeant", starring William Hartnell as Sgt. Grimshawe. Many of you will remember him as the first Dr. Who, but I will always remember him as Will Buckley in "The Mouse That Roared".

The photos on the website appear largely to have been taken at the Crich Tramway Museum in Derbyshire.

I paid it a visit in October but did not see anything about the regiment
