    Re: Going to visit Scotland!

We were there in June 09, and it was very nice and warm (70s) most days, but the there were a couple of very cool windy days too. Bring a Jacket for those windy days. I noticed you are in the south. Realize if it is warm, they don't have air conditioning, and most of the B&Bs don't even have fans. Because of the temps, we kept windows open and then didn't sleep well due to the noise from the street. We're going to Ireland this year, and if it is warm again, we will be buying a cheap box fan and then just leaving it for the next guest where ever we stay last.

    Re: Going to visit Scotland!

I've been twice, in 2007 and 2011. Lightweight raincoat, something to keep you warm, like a fleece or sweater and a couple of pair of stout walking shoes. Going kilted will make you new friends. My son and I were going to the Perth Highland Games in 2007, but they were rained out, so we shuttled up to St. Andrews instead. We were kilted (MacLeod of Lewis) and he was wearing a red U of Alabama hoodie. We were wandering about the cathedral ruins and a group of three ladies from Alabama rushed up to him, wanting pictures. He was a good sport and they were all questions: "Do you attend the University?" "No, ma'am." Have you ever been to America?" "Yes, ma'am, I'm a native." "Where are you from in Scotland?" "Nowhere, ma'am, I'm from Washington State, in the US." Well, these women had their story in their minds already and didn't really care. He was probably an interesting story in their slideshow. As to weather, we saw from sunny and 70 degrees F to snow on our crossing from Port Ascaig to Skye. Be prepared.

Depending on the reason for your visit August is not always the best time as that is Edinburgh Festival month, when everything is crowded and much more expensive. Fine if you want to visit Festival events and/or the Military Tattoo but not so fine if you want peace and quiet

The weather should be mild but as already said we don't really get long periods of settled weather. In rare years we do get a nice long hot summer and one is certainly due but most years the weather is mild but variable right through June, July and August. May and September can be fine in the good years, cold and wet in the bad ones
