I bought a gigantic hide of it a while back to use exclusively for belts and straps. It's expensive stuff, but well worth it.
I did not see that coming. Very cool, indeed. I wonder what they did to this hide, to make it so pliable.
An excelent find, Scott.

It's the exact temper of bridle leather. So I'm betting that in the last stage of tanning they may have done some of the same oiling they'd do for bridle leather-
it is called "Hot Stuffing" and involves forcing oils and waxes back into the hides. These both preserve softness and help protect the leather from the elements.

That was my thought, as well! That bracer I made you is veg tanned. All the veg I work with is fairly stiff. I use it to make belts, but I wouldn't describe it as supple- especially soft like bridle! Color me jealous of that hide.

I've always thought of it as the horses walking along.
Kind of starting to reconsider using a sporran, now…

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Looking very classy indeed, Mookien!
While I retain reservations about white hose, they go very well with the white sweater.

Crackin' sporran, strap and belt Mookien. Great work Scott.
I like the Kilt too. It's beautifully pleated.

Re: Puttin' On The Ritz
Thanks, everyone, for your comments. I couldn't be more pleased with my new sporran and belts.
As far as resembling George Carlin, I disagree. When I look in the mirror, I see Brad Pitt, ..... or Groucho Marx. Sometimes, I talk with them.
As for the garbage can in the background, I have been trying to fire my photographer for years, but I can't. We have a prenupe that dates back to the 1960s that contains a very severe and punitive non-cancellation clause - something about "until death do us part ..." to which I (perhaps foolishly) swore, "I do".
My kilt is a 5-yd Casual from Burnett's and Struth sewn from Lochcarron Strome in the Duncan Ancient tartan. Those B&S kilt makers do a great job. Don't ask me about internal construction. I'm too old to buy green bananas, let alone worry about the longevity of my kilts.
I especially appreciate the insightful and timely comments about the white hose. Stay tuned to this channel. My next thread is tentatively entitled, "When White Is Right".
Finally, I would like to thank Artificer for answering Ryan's and Nighthawk's questions.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.
