I think you may be overlooking another option...do nothing and keep it as is. Nothing wrong with a casual vest (wes'kit) that doesn't button. I know the very idea of an open vest give some here the wobblies, but for pubbing or going shopping it's fine.
In your pics, the beautiful tan color adds contrast to an otherwise dark palette anyway, and the gap at the front isn't so large as to shout "way too small." For what you paid, you can afford to have this one as a knock-about item and use your savings for another in better size...two for the price of one (and a pence).

Thank you all for your replies.
The best fabric shop in East Anglia, by far, is in Kings Lynn. I shall be going there in mid April and will see what fabric is available. You have both given me some good ideas and I will have to see what material I can get before making up my mind.
