Any kilt whether machine stitched or hand sewn can be altered,it's just a matter of how much alteration would be needed, if it's just going to be a few inches difference , then moving the buckles will work ( on either type). Sometimes machine stitching is easier to rip out on the straight portions, but any multi point/bar sewing will be harder, whereas handsewing only uses one single thread and can't be "ripped out" as easily, however I have altered both and don't seen any real problem with doing either. There is often a bit more work in a handsewn kilt in the internal work, so it might take longer to do, that would be the only consideration I would have, and of course, no two kilt makers work exactly the same way either, so until a certain ammount of investigative work is done , no kilt maker would be able to give a definitive price for the alterations either.

Thanks Paul, that has cleared it up for me. I have read elsewhere about stitching methods and based my info on that. Obviously it is wrong.

    Cheers

I can vouch for Paul's work. You won't find better. He made me a superb kilt from Locharron Strome tartan. Excellent.
