I have a pair and for the money (even with postage) they can't be beat.
Chas, these are a great find! Wish I had seen these earlier, I'm not sure I have the time to go for them, my wedding is in 23 working days exactly!

Went down to a great vintage clothes shop here today and had a play around with a couple of stock ties they had. Might go ahead and buy one online (half the price) and try it with different knots.

Tried on the Montrose doublet again last night. It seems quite a short jacket, doesn't it? Think I'll have to get loops sewn on for a belt, too. Not sure what to do to stop it riding up whenever I lift my arms above shoulder height though. There are some clips on the jacket which presumably I should attach to something (the kilt? the belt? the sporran chain?).

Will also have a look online at these tunic shirts and see what there is. £150 is definitely too much though.

Who would have guessed it, my fiancée is spending far less time on her wedding outfit than me... the result of marrying a Scotsman.

There are a number of places you might try for a less-expensive shirt. Google is a wonderful tool! Check out Stanley Ley, for starters, and the Vintage Shirt Company ( now called Darcy Clothing, I believe ).

The Montrose is indeed short and probably only covers two or three inches of the kilt. It needs to be worn with a kilt belt and often has belt loops on the back. On the inside lower back of the doublet should be two elasticated hooks (probably the clips on yours) which attach to the sporran strap or the sporran-strap loops on the back of the kilt or a couple of wee loops sown to the kilt for this purpose. When worn, the hooks and what they attach to should be invisible under the back of the doublet. This should prevent it riding up.

This shirt might bear further examination:

The best search phrase seems to be "Detachable collar"...

Thanks for these links, I don't seem to have been using the right search terms for these items. MacRobert's Reply - I think you're right in what you say about the hooks on mine. They are indeed hooks, not clips. Can't see any loops on the kilt for the sporran chain - should these be on the top? I've always just had the sporran fit in place above my hips, though it's possible it hasn't been high enough in the past.

Not all kilts have sporran loops. Those that do, generally have two located at the back of the kilt and are similar to the belt loops on trousers. However, on kilts they are about 2.5 inches - wide enough to pass both the sporran strap and a kilt belt through them, although they are really there for the sporran strap rather than a belt. Although generally made from the same tartan, belt loops can be made from a matching material by anyone who is competent with a needle and thread. In your case, these could be positioned on the kilt to line up with the hooks on your doublet as well as keeping the sporran strap in place.
