I go with the temperature. Kilt hose in hot weather are torture - maybe even medically dangerous. Mild weather wear scrunched down kilt hose. Have never worn regular sox with a kilt. Just looks weird. I've been into barefoot and sandals with kilts for a few weeks now...no other way...just have to. Folks understand. Bifurcated guys are wearing shorts and sandals...just is in HOT weather country.
I've heard of sandal tans and I've heard of farmer's tans....wonder if there's a kiltie tan where the calfs are tanned and above the knees its lily white - for us Bilagaana/Bahana/Haoule/Gringo types

I wear my Utilikilt this way (with short socks) or even without socks, and sandals or other footwear, quite often. Generally my kilt hose are reserved for my tartan kilts (whether they be worn traditionally or scrunched down).

I like the look of my Utilikilt with short socks as well. I wouldn't be opposed to wearing my tank with short socks, but I have such nice legs that I can pull it off

(shudder) Not a snowball's chance for me. Sandals without socks if it's too hot for hose.

I'm not a fan of "regular" socks worn with kilts, nor ankle length boots for that matter - they seem visually out of proportion on me when I'm kilted. With my short legs a thicker boot sock or kilt hose give me "visual weight" below the knee.

I wore short socks with the kilt until I was around 5 years old.

If I'm gonna be out at casual stuff in hot weather I'll wear some low-cut tennis socks and a t-shirt. I do not see hiking boots and scrunched up wool socks as an adaption to 95 + degree heat.

In my opinion, it takes an entirely casual outfit to make the short socks work - t-shirt, day sporran, low yardage kilt, and leather ankle boots or hiking boots. Not white crew socks - that's going a bit too far for my comfort - but a color that's gently complementary to the shirt or kilt. Zardoz' photo is a really good example of a modern, truly casual, kilt outfit.
