The kilt is an interesting variation of skirted male clothing. I don't doubt the the sarong wearers are any less caring about their versions. Do they also have family, social and political colors and patterns? - probably. I prefer the shorter kilt as the most comfortable way to cover my loins - period. The rest is dressing for the occasion from very casual to "dressing to the nines". The discussions here are sharing the good and the bad of all the variations and practical uses of the kilt.
The guys with close Scottish ties like to show their pride in their traditional tartan wool kilts , dressing traditionally. Many also own and wear non wool and/or non family tartan and/or non tartan and/or modern kilts in their everyday life.
My connection to the clans is nebulous on the male lineage dating to the time of the Vikings. And the more direct female lineage is much harder to track. So I stick with the ( too many - ) generic tartans that strike my fancy.
Thus I don't offend those that view the kilt and/or family tartan as a holy relic.

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

Deeper meanings, indeed!

Or is it that most of you live in the US of A and you feel left out and away from Scotland and you put on an act more so than people that actual live in Scotland.
Maybe you haven't looked around the Internet much, Richard. There are a handful of forums dedicated to kilt-wearing -- this being IMO the best of them. There are, on the other hand, hundreds of forums about more typical fashions where people do indeed post photos of their smart suits, how they paired a certain tie with a certain shirt, their new shoes, what they wore to dinner or dancing, etc. It's not that everyone here is holding up the kilt as some end-all-be-all item of clothing (well, okay, some do) but rather where folks can share their common enjoyment of the garment.

Sorry I didn't mean to start a fight, maybe I'm not so patriotic as you people and didn't not intend to offend anybody.

Truly, my kilt is very much one of those scary primal gods. Seems I can't go anywhere in it without some virgin ending up spread-eagled, begging to be sacrificed...

When you have more than one kilt though you can be kilted more often without wearing any individual kilt out.
Jock may well be right about many Scots only having one. Many here on X Marks do have more than one so they need more occasions to find besides those special ones to give them a fair outing.

And you are quite welcome to hold and share those opinions here. Expecting everyone else to agree with you is probably unrealistic though.
Every one of us has his or her own reason(s) for being here. I seriously doubt that the reasons of any two people here are exactly the same. That is one of my reasons for participating here. There is a wealth of learning in considering the opinions of those with whom I do not necessarily agree -- both about them and about myself.

Or. The person owning two kilts going to the same amount of events as when the owner had only one kilt, he might will only wear the indidual kilt for half the times. Or, the two kilts could now last twice as long. Now what about Hamish with 100 kilts? -------------------------
