    A belt can make you look very smart but I would not say it was vital to begin with. Personally I never wear one but I would not be seen dead without a sporran.

    The first thing you need is a good kilt. I know you are on a budget (who isn't?) but I would recommend you not skimp too much on the kilt itself. If the kilt looks good, you would be amazed at how it really raises the level of the entire outfit, even if you don't have all the nice accessories you might otherwise want.

    In terms of accessories, here is the minimum you will want:
    1) a sporran -- doesn't have to be anything fancy, just functional
    2) a narrow leather belt to hang the sporran from -- many sporrans come with one when you purchase them
    3) a decent pair of kilt hose
    4) garters to keep the hose from slipping down

    That's it. Unless you are attending a formal function with minimum dress requirements, that should be enough to get you through most casual outings, and you can add any other accessories you might want at a later time, as you need them and can afford them.
