Looking for tartan advice

I have a completely different but related question. My most recent full Scot ancestor was my Grandmother Campbell. Accordingly I started out with a very inexpensive Black Watch kilt, as it is now accepted by the clan leader (it wasn't always). I hope to soon get a PV kilt from USA Kilts in Ancient Campbell. Thing is, my grandmother's mother was a full blooded Scot of the Clan Wallace. Is it reasonable to celebrate that ancestry too isn't it, even if I never knew the woman?

Thanks for any advice. I know for the most part we can feel comfortable doing about anything we want, I'm just curious about precedence. There are some beautiful Wallace tartans!

People wear tartans with no excuse whatsoever. It is very reasonable to celebrate your Clan Wallace connection. Laudable, even. Of course, you have to consider the source of this advice, someone with Scottish, Welsh, Irish, Nordic and (shudders and spits it out) English heritage, and takes every opportunity to celebrate all of them.

By golly Geoff, that is what I'm starting to see here sir. I think it is great! And kudos to Clan Wallace for their philosophy: "The Clan Wallace Society - Worldwide (CWS) represents all Scots of any Clan and all others who wish they were Scots." So my little lassy and I have been red fanciers for 40 years. This means more expense! Argh!

I am not of any sort of Scottish descent and am looking for a kilt. I figure the best way to find one is to ask those who know a lot about tartans for reccomondations, so a few things about me that I feel are significant.

My last name is Butcher.
I am of English, Swedish, Denmark and German descent.
I was raised in Pennsylvania (USA, this seems to be an international forum), I saw they have their own tartan.
I live in Ohio.
I was in the Army, not interested in the Army tartan.
I was in the infantry.
Specifically the 22nd Infantry Regiment, seriously doubt they have their own tartan.
I have the Combat Infantryman's Badge, if there was a CIB tartan that would be awesome.
My primary hobby is powerlifting.
A developing 2nd hobby is highland games, I wouldn't wear the SAAA tartan for the same reason I don't wear Hawian shirts.
I seem to think the tartans with dull green colors look best.
I keep wanting to type tarten, is there a tartan for people who do that?
Most of my family back a few generations and beyond were farmers.

If I think of anything else I will add it, thanks in advance for the advice.

I too am a blue braid, from the 101st.

Look at Lochcarron's http://www.lochcarron.com/stromesw.htm and DC Dalgliesh's weathered/reproduction tartans. They are supposed to look like a tartan that has been buried in a peat bog for the last 200 years. I love the colors, they are faded, earth tones, and dont hurt your eyes.

I haven't posted in quite some time, but this thread has for some reason sucked me in.

I say wear what you like regardless of any affiliation. If you like it, you'll wear it more. Besides, you're a power lifter. Who's going to question you?
Even better; find a tartan your wife/significant other likes & thinks you'll look good in. Then you'll really wear it a lot.

Since making this post my sister has bought me a kilt in Black Watch tartan, super excited for it to come. I mentioned them being expensive and having my first highland games soon so she told me it was an early birthday present. I kind of realized the exact tartan isn't something (for me anyways) to get wrapped around the axel about. I like the black watch design so that is good enough for me. Assuming I wear it frequently, I'm pretty sure it will replace my gym shorts when it arrives I would like an additional one in all Irish tartan. Not because I'm Irish but because I like the look. If I end up with a clan tartan I will at least make a point of learning some history of the clan out of respect but that is far more than I have ever done in regards to Levi Strauss. Thanks for the advice everyone!
