Go with the hose first. For a casual belt a few members have gone with a leather trademans tool belt that you can pick up at a hardware store pretty cheap. They are at least 2" wide and I think come in a natural leather colour.

Hose first club member here too. They will bring immediate variations to uour kit whereas, as others have said, the belt is less "required" if you will.

I agree with the majority, I have 3 sets of hose with a forth on the way. But I only have 1 belt, which I don't wear that often.

You are in the area of Williamsburg and I would assume there are reenactor groups and sutlers in the area. My favorite kilt belt is one from a sutler in Gettysburg. I got it for about $20 (US). The buckle I've had for years. Be creative and develop your kit over time.

hose first .... you never know when you'll need to water the flowers..... dangit, this isn't the gardening forum is it?!

sorry ...I thought it was funny

Then again I've worn normal socks and cloth leg wrappings (essentially cheap scarves) tied with boot laces (actually a variant of the 'leggings thing' I rather like) for 10 months of daily kilt 'out-and-abouting' and just got my first hose socks this month so maybe I'm not good for advice on this issue.

If you forget the scarves, you can always paint you legs.

Haaaaa ! This is not the gardening forum or the painting forum ( tartan paint , crack me up ) ... but both were very funny !!!

I am with the majority , hose first before belt. However , both can get a bit addictive ! Especially when you start checking out all the fine custom leather work that's available for a very wide range of kilt belts !

I'm in agreement with several of the above people.

I have a nice belt but I almost never wear it. Actually, just about the only time I wear it is when I'm wearing a military-style jacket, and I wear the belt to support a dirk, which is the belt's original and true function anyhow. In vintage Highland Dress catalogues belts are called a "dirk belts".

I don't care for people nowadays using the term "kilt belt" because a kilt doesn't need a belt or have an associated belt like trousers do. If your kilt doesn't fit correctly it should be altered.

What I find especially ill-looking is people wearing a dirk belt under their waistcoat, with the belt peeking out. When dirk belts are worn with the waistcoat they are traditionally worn over the waistcoat.
