But the high-buttoned waistcoat doesn't really lend itself to black tie. I'm still a dunce at all the different levels of fancy dress; what would you guys say this jacket/waistcoat combo fits best with? Just "evening wear" but not "black tie"?

Sorry for the slight threadjack, but...
I think you are right, Tobus. It is a six button waistcoat, so does not automatically slot into our 3 button / 5 button categories, although it doesn't look to be cut higher than a normal 5 button. Although, not strictly speaking 'black tie', I think it could be worn with a black bow tie to good effect.

    Regards

    Chas

Since nearly all the pipe bands in the world wear Argyll jackets, and nearly all the bands have women in them, female-cut Argyll jackets are widely available.

I never thought of that - looking at pipe band wear. I do have a suit jacket that would look good with my kilt, but it doesn't have that really classy look of a P.C. or Argyll. Some of my ancestry is Campbell, and some of them are associated with Argyll, so it would make perfect sense for me to have an Argyll jacket with my Kennedy kilt!

After scouting around the web, I think I might be happiest if I make my own jacket and vest and purchase some of those fabulous buttons for my jacket and vest. Love those classy buttons!
