DK yes it is somewhat of an anomaly. I will write to the Commissioner Duncan Cameron for his views on the matter. Hopefully if I get a response I will post it here.

Now I feel kind of more confused than when I started. May I wear it without offending a Cameron or a observer assuming that I am a Cameron?

Bren , as a Cameron I would not be offended in the slightest if you wanted to wear a Cameron kilt. Indeed we would be honoured to think that you wanted to wear it. Only thing I would say is to learn a little bit about Cameron history in the slight chance you may be asked what tartan you are wearing.

Remember no one can tell you what you can wear its totally up to you.

Grizzly, you might also get them to see if they can get the Scottish Tartans Authority to correct their site too. The have the same info, that it has not been adopted by the Clan
    STA entry

Yes I had noticed that too Mike, I have sent an email regarding both the STA and the SROT to the Clan Commissioner, so am awaiting a response.

I have received a very prompt response from Duncan Cameron Clan Cameron Commisioner for Scotland. His response in full is as follows -

    Dear Simon,

Tartans are always a disputed are and no doubt ex members of the Cameron
Highlanders and its later grouping would say Eracht is a regimental tartan.
However McLean of Dochgarroch in speaking to all the Camerons at a Culloden
lunch in front of Lochiel said it was ok to wear Erracht tartan. I wear
Erracht in various forms and some of the new weathered ones are great. Look
at the 'ancient and rare tartan book'

Interestingly the Cameron clan tartan is a Sobiesky -Stewart invented
tartan, the Lochiel tartan is for the famil,y so that leaves the Erracht and
    the hunting tartans to wear.

    Best wishes Duncan

The best that I can deduce from this is that Cameron of Erracht tartan is either unofficially official or officially unofficial depending on which side of the fence you sit.

Having recently ordered a COE weathered tank from Paul Henry if its good enough for Duncan Cameron it's certainly more than good enough for me. I also won't feel out of place at Achnacarry.

Back in the 50s/60s when Scotland was flooded with ex-army kilts, there must have been thousands of men sporting Cameron of Erracht who had not the slightest Cameron connection. Of course Scottish indifference may not apply in other necks of the woods!

Its a handsome tartan, it was my first made, my second is a Cameron hunting weathered. Only because I didn't have the patience for someone else to order Cameron tartan in its ancient form as minimium order is ten yards! One day my friends, one day!
