Yep, friction is the enemy here, hence the biking shorts, and a lighter weight kilt, and the recommedation for the PV kilt as opposed to wool. Plus, PV kilts can be thrown in the washing machine after the race.

Yes, I've run in a Sportkilt, and it's pretty comfy. Also easily washable. You'll like it.
If you look at the runningkilts.com site, you will see that this has little in common with a kilt other than it is on a man. It is basically a cover-up worn over compression shorts.

Gonna be "running" in a tank next week...for a 5k run walk...guess I'll be mostly walking...but its gonna be cold so the tank is the choice...or maybe leather.

Main thing in running or hiking kilted is PROTECT your boy parts from friction....and you may find the kilt hem beats the back of your knees up pretty bad from repeated impact....sort of like a water drip torture...its not the impact but the repeated light impact. Best way to find out is go try it out.

Aye, the point is, it's not unknown. I'd prefer the Sportkilt.

And, compression shorts will probably be a lot better than bike shorts. Most of mine have too much chamois pad to be comfy running. Triathlon shorts, maybe.

Well since it's not wrapped, and not pleated in back, it's not really kilt, is it? Just a running skirt intended for men.

There have been a few threads here about running in kilts. I run in kilts and have three different ones to do it in. I would not consider running in a wool for many reasons foremost being sweating up the thing around the waist and all. They just arent as washable as acrylic, PV or sports fiber. Most of my running is trail running so here are my thoughts of what to wear and why.

Cold as heck and windy: I have a Stillwater standard acrylic that I bought used for camping, travel, hiking and running. When it is really cold I will wear this with leggings (not meggings). Cold means at least 20 or below. I use a Ultimate Direction Solo water bottle carrier and it acts as a good belt.

Cold but not too cold: My Elkommando kilts work well here. Nice thing is they have cargo pockets to keep thin liner gloves in or to put my hat or gloves in when I do warm up. Usually RoadRunner Sports 6 inch compression shorts that are very light weight. Only issue is these kilts ride lower than a traditional kilt so they can ride your hips a little.

Spring, Summer, Fall: I made a light weight nylon running kilt for this purpose. It is made like a traditional kilt with pleats, traditional waist and two belt straps. There is a thread about this kilt on XMarks also. It is quick dry, very light and has a quick dry wicking liner in the waist. For the chaffing I use Body Glide and no underthings.

Ok a couple of photos to prove the points.

    Nylon running kilt

plenty of swish and easy leg movement

Off into the woods I go

Back from a great 7 mile trail run

Elkommando in action on a Mt Baker approach

    Chilling out at 6000Ft camp

Ready to head out for a winter camping trail run in ElKommando

I guess if I still could manage a 5:30 pace when I was in my 30's I might consider compression shorts only but back then I didnt know better. Perhaps I would have opted for a kilt hand I known the comfort and freedom. I know the next marathon or ultra I do I will be kilted indeed.

Yeah, I have a skort that looks much the same.

As far as what it's worn over... I went sort of o.O when I saw they were saying something about possibly not wearing anything underneath. Aside from my thought that undies would serve the same purpose as a sport bra for women... there's no way you could run in that thing-- especially since it looks like it maybe has big slits on the sides!-- and not get arrested!

I did the cupid's undie run in a stillwater one, albeit not a long run, the only real issue was the wind which fortunately dropped for the run...

Mrs.Crash and I did the kilt run in Perth Ontario this past summer and are signed up to do it again this year. The idea behind the kilt run was to set the Guinness world record for most kilted runners, which we did beating out Perth Scotland and Perth Australia. We wore Sportkilts as did many others but most wore kilts that were offered for sale by the organizers. The run is 8km/5miles through city streets and the golf course cart paths. http://perthkiltrun.blogspot.ca
