Hopefully you mean the Traditional Highland Civilian Dress instruction book, not the "other" Scots instruction book that's used by the Tartan Army.

Ah yes. The wee midgies. We use "Off" and "Di-ethyl Toluamide" ("Deet") over here. Out of curiosity, what do the wee Scottish buggar-bugs hate most, Jock?

I am not sure that anything works that well Bill, but "Skin so Soft", made by Avon seems to get the vote of many, including the Forestry Commission, UK Special Forces and the locals.

Hi RAF,
Lots of good advice here. As an ex pat Scot I usually manage two or three trips north of the border each year to visit relatives and friends. Me and the missus have also got a trip to the highlands and islands in May/June for a bit of a holiday.
After far too long, I've only just got into the kilt wearing business and intend to wear it as much as possible, but I won't be taking it north this spring, pretty much for the reasons given by other posts to this thread.
Having said that, if you've got the urge to wear the kilt, especially on a hike in Skye, go for it mate. Just follow the advice from Jock. You've got nothing to lose and you'll regret it if you don't - and if I run across a kilted American on Skye at the beginning of June he'll get a cheery hello and a big thumbs up!
Steve.

Ah yes. But do you really want what's under your kilt... to be "soft?"

As an exiled Scot living in England, I spent a week in Edinburgh last year, and wore my kilt all the time. I really enjoyed it, and had some favourable comments. No negatives at all. I can only repeat what others have said - go for it! Hope you have a great time!

I would prefer it to DEET!

You'll be among the few. When I went to Scotland in 2003, I didn't bring my kilt as I didn't really have an occasion to wear it. I preferred my American blue jeans for trapsing in wet bracken or through gorse plants (OUCH!!). I only saw Scots wearing the kilt while busking on the Royal Mile or piping at Blair Castle. OH! There was one exception - for the airport, where it was packed with Celtic Fitba' Club fanatics on their way to Seville for the play-off. There were lots in their green-and-white striped jerseys and wedding kilts singing their fight song throughout the terminal building!
