New Black Isle Kilt - Made by Me

I just finished my first kilt with a lot of help from TAOK (Thank you Barb T.) It is an 8-yard Black Isle (16oz) pleated to the stripe.

The pictures show a few wrinkles from sitting and a few dog hairs from the Border Collie, but that is just life.

I had a lot of fun making this kilt. And I learned a lot. Black Isle probably wasn't the best tartan to start with. I was working under a bank of eight T-5 daylight fluorescent bulbs and I still had trouble aligning the stripes and centering the pleats. Black stripes on a black background is difficult to work with. And, of course, I made a few mistakes that I won't make next time. If you look closely you will see that I need to move the belt loops.

The only thing I changed from Barb's instructions was the underapron buckle. I liked the buckle system on my Matt Newsome kilt so well that I used his method. And it had the added benefit of not having to make the buttonhole through the pleated waist.

I already have more fabric on order for my next kilt - Sutherland (reproduction) from D C Dalgliesh.
