As to your OP, if he has no other sporran, and you're buying his first one, then I think a black leather sporran would be the way to go. If he's going to be wearing it almost exclusively for very dressy occassions, then a dressy hunting sporran, maybe with a silver cantle, could be used for a bit of both dressy and casual.

White fur is very dressy, usually only for black tie equivalent evening wear. My only fur sporran is white with black tassels, but, if I had it to do over, I'd likely buy a darker fur, just because I have become less showy with age and experience.

But that white sporran is pretty snazzy with evening attire!

If I recall, you're trying to outfit your lad on a modest budget. A well made black leather sporran with just a bit of "bling" is dressy enough for all but extremely formal occasions, and can be worn for less formal functions without seeming overdressed. Leather sporrans are also typically less expensive than fur sporrans.

If he has only one sporran then black or dark brown leather daywear would be my choice.

Have a look at Rocky's website usakilts or any of the other vendors on this forum. They all have plenty of choice to suit all budgets and occasions.

If you are talking about white leather, that is almost exclusively military and would look odd for civilian use.

All of this is very solid advice.

As was mentioned, lot depends on the occasion-

If this is his first sporran and you want as much range of use as possible, a black hunting sporran is a great way to go. It's a little fancier than
a standard day sporran, so it can be worn for a nice evening out, but not too grand so that it looks out of place with a jumper and ankle boots.

If it's for a formal event a fur sporran with a metal cantle is great, but it looks a bit odd for daywear (even though lots of people do it).
I'd generally avoide white, it gets dirty, can yellow over time, and is really a bit flash. There are so many lovely furs available which are more practical and
a little less "LOOK AT ME".

Excellent advice, Scott. And with you being a sporran maker of the highest standard and aesthetic, I am sure your suggestions will be well received.

Amen to that Kyle. There are great sporran makers and Artificer is without a doubt in a very small, exclusive group.

My other thought is that I still have my eye on the white/blue Dress Davidson in the future, & again, have the same issue, but in reverse: black would stand out, but is that a good thing?

I like wearing my black watch with a brown belt, brown sporran, and dark blue (navy, or levit blue) hilt hose, and matching tartan flashed.

I think that this "brown" look is a nice break up from being "all black".

When I'm going for a more formal look (while wearing a black watch tartan) I like to wear my white fur sporran, with black belt, and the same dark blue (or black) kilt hose.
