You are certainly right about this event in terms of how open it is. Dinner and ball will set you back 225 pounds a head. Dinner is usually arranged by tables (so bring all your formally kilted friends). The procession and set reels are by permission and I understand that there is little tolerance for those that haven't got their dances down pat. While there are some odd variations on highland formal wear worn at the ball, you would want to make sure your kit was up to snuff - who would want to be turned away at the door. A lot to be said for going with someone who knows the drill.

Thank you for the post, Kyle, especially the dress code details. I looked at every issue posted on their web site (except 2011 which needs a password) and must say that it's fascinating to see all the variations of formal Highland dress represented. Very enlightening!
