Just so I have the dimensions right in case I end up wanting to go the down the same road, a belted plaid is essentially four yards (for an average person) of 54" wide fabric? The Giftshop for the Scottish Tartan Museum also sells quality fabric by the yard, probably more pricey but that's another place I was looking at.
