You ain't wrong Simon. I've just been told some samples are in the post and I'll be pulling the trigger later this week. Meantime I'm thinking of a five yarder as well! What's a chap to do

Grizzly,
I have a 7 yard at 16oz, pleated to the sett but since I bought it second hand I do not know the mill. I love this tartan and the weight and hand. I had to hem it because the original length was 25 1/2" and I needed 23". I don't think you can go wrong with either mill.

I went with Lochcarron 16oz, simply because my kiltmaker said she usually used it and preferred it. Here it is

About the pleating, I posted a thread here asking for advice, which had the photos my kiltmaker had sent me showing various options
http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...pleated-62121/
I went with pleating to the pairs of rust-brown lines in the purple band, and I'm very happy with the result. I nearly always prefer pleating to a stripe or a block over pleating to the sett (form follows function, tradition, two looks for the price of one, etc).
I didn't want to pleat to the brown block because I thought it made the back of the kilt look too brown; I wanted to preserve the purple.

Great choice. I've seen fellow Aussie, 'Grizzled Ian's kilts'. I note his 'Isle of Skye' wins the most compliments from the ladies.

Lovely kilt OCR and thanks for the link for pleating options. I agree that I would want to preserve the purple on the reverse too.
Cheers Grizz its definitely going to be IOS next. Just waiting for a sample f he Marton mills to arrive. I have a Lochcarron swatch to compare.

Well, Simon, I too have an IOS kilt (made with Locharron strome). Unfortunately I only have two bad phone camera photos of it but you're welcome to see them if you want to. Let me know. My kilt is made of Locharron strome soley because I let my kiltmaker chose which one.

Thanks David, I have a swatch in Lochcarron Strome, I was more interested in seeing a side by side comparison of the two. You know who is hopefully sending a swatch of the MM Jura fabric so will then be able to feel as well as see the difference.

I LOVE IOS tartan. It is my favorite and by hook or crook, had to get a kilt in it. Turns out I got on "pre-owned", as they say in the luxury car business. Fits very well. It is 16 oz and the sett is right at 7.5 inches. I don't know the mill, but it is a really nice. It is a very versatile tartan and seems to go with anything you put with it. Don't know if it is MM or Lochcarron, but am planning on taking a color accurate printout of it to Scotland, so I can pick up a wee matching metre of IOS to make a fly plaid. (The kilt that wins the trip to Scotland next month is going to be the clan tartan, sorry IOS)
