What do you think about the buckles? Have you replaced them yet?

Hey there, a couple of questions. Does the kilt have a selvedge at the bottom? Were you able to choose the length? Where did you get you bet?

    Cheers!

I like the kilt pretty well, it isnt near as heavy (total weight) as I thougth it would be. Probably because there isnt much yardage in the kilt. The tartan is really thick and fuzzy though, feels nice on the legs. The kilt seems pretty well made but the buckles were absolutely horrible! I wore it once with the straps and buckles that it came with and decided right away that they had to go.

Here is the new outside buckle

I repositioned the inner apron strap to the inside, like what is normally seen on 4 yard box pleated kilts. To me, this just works and looks better and while you have all the straps/buckles off, you might as well do it the way you want.

    And the finished product

    What do yall think?

I dont know how to describe the selvedge, maybe one of the other WPG kilt owners can help me out. Its not hemmed, I guess its like a blanket selvedge? I dont know.

You can choose waist size and length within their stock sizes.

Belt? I made it from latigo and a buckle(no longer stocked) I bought at Tandy leather store. However, you can get one just like it if not better at the Scottish Tartans Museum

I have a WPG Gordon Highlander kilt, and it has knife pleats, so I am guessing it has more yardage. I don't know for sure.

But I can tell you that it's a pretty darned hot kilt in Atlanta in the summer. I only wore it once in the hottest summer time, and I won't do that again! That was in Garlinburg, and even up there it was hot!

I also wore it once here when it was about 28 degrees, and I really appreciated the extra warmth. I was not the least bit chilly.

It does have selvege on the bottom, but being so heavy, it's not as sharp as a lighter wool would be.

The lengths come in 23" - 27" I believe, depending on what they have in stock. I think they probably order quite a few at a time in various sizes and the sell them off until the stock is low. That's just conjecture on my part. I don't work there, nor have I asked.

As to the buckles, they are horrible. The have two prongs like the originals, but they are pretty cheap, I think. Replacing them is a good idea, although I haven't done it on mine yet. But the, I haven't worn mine in a couple of years since I have a newer one that gets a lot of air play. I recommend buying one a bit longer than most since it's a military kilt that should be worn very high.

WPG oftens upgrades their stuff when they reorder, and I hope they'll get better buckles on the next batch. Otherwise, for a very heavy wool kilt, it's a doozy! I like mine a lot, and if that's what you are looking for-- a heavy kilt--I recommend it. The price is quite affordable.
