I rarely wear a bonnet with the kilt but when I do, I wear a balmoral of which I have a choice between the following;
On my green balmoral I have a cockade of the same colour with the Masonic emblem (square, compasses and letter G) with buckle and strap, and on my navy balmoral with red toorie, I have a black cockade with my Ross clan crest with the Latin inscription 'Spem Successus Alit on the buckle and strap.
I can of course switch the crests as required.
I personally prefer black cockades and ribbon on black and navy bonnets, and on other colours of bonnets (lovats, greens, and fawns) I prefer that the colour of the cockades, ribbons etc. approximates as closely as possible to the colour of wool used for the crown.

On my black (no dicing) balmoral I have a brass badge comprising two English oak leaves and an acorn on a black cockade. The ribbons are flying rather than bowed.
On my black (no dicing) Glengarry (one of the coolest hats I've ever owned) I have a larger than standard silver clansman's badge. The ribbons are also loose as is customary.
I very rarely, if ever wear either.
