KCB of course I'm a bit biased but once you see a Maple Leaf kilt out in the sunlight you'll see what a great tartan and kilt it is. As you said the swatch just doesn't do it justice. Some where in here is a picture of Santa in his Maple Leaf kilt at Niagara Falls. It really looks sharp. I have also seen A Hay's ML in person and it also is very sharp.
I'm just trying to be the person my dog thinks I am.

    It's a handsome tartan indeed.
Just be sure to look at photos of kilts using tartan from different mills and of different weight fabric. As with most tartans, those variables can really change the look of the tartan. For a good example, look at Rocky's kilt compared with A Hay's kilts.

Not far from the truth! When I was growing up I lived in northern Quebec on an Air Force Base and I remember that the last day of school coincided with the first day of summer, there were still large snow banks as we walked home.

Kcb, that is a good question! It was made at Freedom Kilts, but I can't remember if the mill was Fraser & Kirkbright or Lochcarron. The Wizard of B.C. will know for sure. I believe that Alex's kilt in the picture was made by Freedom Kilts from the same mill as well. His has pockets, though.
