Hi Sydnie,
The Lamont Tartan uses a Blackwatch base, and I have been wearing Navy hose, and I think they look good. I tried ancient/lovat blue hose and my wife hated them. I have also thought about a dark green, and think they would be good option as well. As someone is bound to say, so I'll say it first ... black hose will make him look like a member of some generic pipe band or other.

What about a pair of dark red/claret cable knit hose? Black Argyll, BW kilt, and Navy hose are all very dark. I think he'd benefit from the contrast of a nice deep red...

I'm just not sure if the family is ready to go beyond matchy-matchy. I think it would look great and said in a previous post that I might make both... we'll see how that goes.

Navy blue cable knit hose will be an awesome way to accent the outfit. I would put a little colour into the cuffs if able. I'm jealous of some hand knit cable hose... I still need to learn to do hose/socks for my own knitting. I am just a rookie, though. I am sure whatever you do will be appropriate. A nice solid colour is suitable to evening wear anyway...so go matchy-matchy if that is what the bride will prefer.

How about making the cuff sideways, with a plaited cable, and putting a single red stitch in the centre of each set of three stitches.
I used to have a grey jersey with the neckband and cuffs done like that which was so admired someone stole it.....

That would be really nice! Wonder where I could steal one?

It is actually quite easy to do - once you can do the cable technique you just need three lengths of the red yarn and knit the middle stitch. Strand the background colour as one stitch isn't going to be very long.
It helps to make more impact if the single stitch is done in a yarn thicker than the rest of the sock, double knitting if the sock is in 4 ply, so it fills the gap.

Thanks Anne, that hint about the thicker yarn is especially helpful. I figured "three bobbins of red" would do the trick. Off to the stash, and then to knit up some samples to check gauge and cable details. Oh, this is going to be fun!
Really should get the two current pairs-in-progress off the needles before I start this set in earnest. . .
