Greetings, and welcome from north-eastern Illinois. After reading the other replies it looks like you have a lot of great ideas to choose from.

If your college has a humanities department, and you know anyone who is working/studying in the arts department, and there are ceramics classes, you may be able to get a custom kilt pin made for a very reasonable amount. Silver metal clay can be moulded into just about any shape you want and certainly can be made as a kilt pin with the addition of some stainless steel pins (like the ones they use on tie tacks).
You could also get one made in ceramic and glazed in colours and metal...the option could be limited only by your imagination and artistic skills.
For a visual of what Destin is describing check this thread of a recent thrift shop find: http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...ilt-pin-81959/
And welcome to the rable.

The The Glencairn Glass sounds excellent! I don't know if he drinks whiskey or not, but I know he does enjoy his vast array of other alcoholic beverages (and so I wouldn't be surprised if he did), but I'm sure he would love the glass anyway because he loves his Burn's Supper. int:
Thanks so much for the suggestion!

I am involved in the humanities department because I play in both the marching and symphonic bands here. I went to the ceramics department for a very small need, and they weren't interested in helping me (which I can't understand why since I offered to pay). Long story short, I did the job by myself with air dry clay.
That's still a really cool idea, but I wouldn't have enough time to get it done. I only have this week of classes and then a week of finals before I'm done until spring. That's definitely something that I will consider though for future gifts! (his birthday in March, or maybe next Christmas). I know more people in my hometown locally who would be more willing to help me.
Thanks for the suggestion!

I want to thank everyone so much for the replies! Oh my gosh, I was so nervous to post here thinking that perhaps my lack of knowledge and heritage would not be appreciated, but everyone here has been so kind and nice and have made me feel so welcome! I'm so glad that I decided to join this forum! Just thanks so much, everyone!

Welcome to XMarks, efenn.
I really can't say what you should get your man for a Christmas gift as I am a firm believer that the gift should be meanful and well, I don't know him enough to suggest anything.
May I just say that if you're going to order something online, you'd better get your skates on!

efenn ,
Welcome to XMarks !
The kilt pin is a very nice idea as a gift for your piper boyfriend . I can appreciate that you may think it's not enough and especially as a college student that you have limited funds .
I can offer one suggestion , give him the kilt pin along with a hand written letter that tells him what you have told us .
I think the written words are far more valuable .

Hi Efenn,
Welcome from the Northeast of Scotland. You can love Scotland in your soul without "knowledge" or "heritage"!

Efenn,
You should try and get a good look at what he already owns to avoid repetition. That said, hand tied hose garters are a nice touch that not all pipers have. The Glencairn glass, a kilt pin, sgian dubh etc.. are all very nice ideas.
Welcome to xmarks!
