It's probably a good idea to listen to Scott about the construction and to Scott and DK about the MoD mark. I've no idea what the centre of this sporran is all about, but the pelt looks like beaver to me. As Matt said, there are no 'rules' about brass metals or brown leather and evening wear.

Good! It's not just me. I have always preferred it to silver, especially in an evening setting. It's warmer and more hospitable.

But you know this, so I'm guessing your question was rhetorical.
That from the same author that said one should only wear the sgian dudh on the right leg - tricky for those of us left handers. That and many other must do's mean that JC's work should be read with an open mind. There's guidance and there's doctrine; the latter belongs to the military and other organisations where uniformity is required, not personal clothing.

The only downside is that brass is harder to keep clean than silver - unless you know a trick of two - I hate Brasso!

Get it all nice and clean and then clear coat it.

The auction got too rich for my blood so this interesting odd sporran won't be coming home to me.

Actually Nathan, 82 quid is somewhat on the low side for these cantles over the last couple of years. The usual price has been around the $200 mark (though as discussed it may have been damaged by modifications)

Fair enough but every time I put in a bid, I was already automatically outbid by the bidder that finally won it.
Plus I had to factor in shipping and duties. At the end of the day, I lurk for the real steals, not fair market value. I just got a well constructed sealskin sporran (that I posted in another thread) for $35 Canadian and shipping was $10.

You're not alone in the bargain hunting game Nathan. A lot of my sporrans and a few of my jackets have come from absolute bargains through judicious shopping. I purchased one MoD cantle for $45.00 because the bag was covered in long fur and the pic on ebay did not show the cantle in its best light. All the best with your hunting mate.

Thanks for that, any suggestions for a good clear coat? I tried once with an aerosol varnish but it dried before the droplets could coalesce and it took me ages to get it off again! Maybe it was too warm a day.
