I generally wear garter ties with the fuzzy ends hanging out like flashes. For dressier occasions, I would wear red grosgrain ribbon flashes, but I do have a couple pair of simpler wool flashes, both red and blue for different colored hose. I never go without because I just like that little splash of color. And either the ties or the elastic garters hold my socks up!

I've recently taken a liking to claret hose with blue garters. Jock had some on in a photo a while back. Very nice, indeed.

not needed if no sgian. but i am with the "flash of color" crowd on this one. i have a garter tie and a set of bisley garters, which i like a lot more than the typical flat flashes.

I have one of those Shooting Sock Garter sets, nice colours (the set at upper left, with ancient blue, claret, brick red, and bottle green) and it's handy because I can coordinate whatever hose I'm wearing that day.
I'll put claret flashes with blue hose, blue or green flashes with claret hose, and so forth. When I stopped to think about it, I realised that I'm putting a cool colour and a warm colour together. Doesn't matter which kilt. I do the same with shirt & tie: red tie with blue shirt.
Those knit yarn Shooting Sock Garters are nice because you can throw them in your kit bag and not worry about them. Flat kilt flashes, I have to make sure that they're stored flat or they might have nasty creases when I go to wear them.
Score card:
kilts: 5
socks: several plain pair, one tartan, one castellated 'thriced', plus a couple pair of diced hosetops
flashes: around a dozen, plus a full-length pair of wool garters for the castellated hose
belts, jackets, shoes, hats: way too many

I have a variety of sets of flashes but mostly wear claret garter ties.
Regarding the score card, I think I have too much kit. That's partially due to being indecisive and not being able to resist a killer deal. You can be very smartly turned out with a fraction of this amount of kit.
Score card:
Kilts: 2 and one in the mail. I'd be very happy with 1.
Sporrans: 8 (thinning this down)
Socks: 10 or 11 pairs. Most are plain. One checkered top, one pair of diced hose.
Flashes: garter ties and a hand full of flashes in assorted colours.
Jackets etc... Lots.
