The Edinburgh Zoo is a good one. Find out if they still do the penguin walk. And I agree with KenB. The tour of Mary King's Close was a delightful surprise. One of the best tours I've ever done. Go to Marks and Spencer.

I'd visit with my Macpherson cousins that live in Haymarket and not too far away in Haddington; visit Kinloch Anderson's showroom in Leith; visit heraldic engraver and silversmith, Ian Grant on Rodney Street; visit the National Museum and National Gallery of Scotland (as I have countless times before, yet I never tire of both places); walk the streets and closes aimlessly, without any particular purpose or destination; and eat and drink until my heart's content at some of my favourite culinary establishments and pubs (off of the beaten/touristy path).

If you like to do a bit of walking, it's possible to walk along the Water of Leith (perhaps from Corstorphine Road to the Botanical Gardens), or from South Queensferry to Hopetoun House. There are various books of local walks available. I did both of these walks when in Edinburgh a year ago, wearing a kilt throughout my week's holiday.

Swing down Jacksons close off of the mile, since it bears my name, take another stroll through the gallery, then relax for an evening at my favourite hotel down in Haymarket.

All good suggestions! The Scottish Museum goes on the list, as does the Royal Yacht, Britannia and the Mary Glen close. Alex, we will be in Scotland for 18-20 days. Hawick for three days/four nights. We'll visit the Locharron and Dalgliesh factories in Selkirk. Then up to Stirling to see Bannockburn and the castle, thence to Balleter, where I will wrestle with the Inver Stone and we'll have a day of hillwalking.
The next day, drive to Inverness via Keith and the Textile Center, the Knockando Wool Mill and the Abelour distillery. The next day I'll throw at the Inverness Highland Games and hope to meet up with Jock Scot!
Then on to Inverary for four days to examine a number of MacNaughton sites and throw at the Inverary Highland Games. From there we go to Glasgow where we'll visit the Gal Gael and the Transportation museum. The next day, head to Airth for their Highland Games, and then overnight in Falkirk before heading home.
I only wish I had four more days to get to the isles of Skye and Arran.

That sounds like a well rounded trip, Alan. Well done, mate! We will try to swing up from Kingussie to Inverness (just down the A9) for the games this year as well, since we will be in the Highlands beginning in mid-July. Also, 2014 will be a very special year for the Highland Capital, because for the first time since the Northern Meeting had their "True Highland Games" back in 1822, this year will see Inverness stage two Highland Games!
Cheers,

That reads like a worthwhile itinerary Alan.
Hope to meet up with you while you are in Hawick.

It turns out that there are a few tickets still available for the weightlifting venue at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on July 25th! AAAAAAGGGGHHHH.....not sure if the Luminous Joan wants to sit through a weightlifting tourney, but that would be very cool to see!
I spotted the Commonwealth Games in your signature, Alex...thanks for that!
