I suppose it also depends on your definition of rude.
When a man walks up to a woman and asks what she has on under her skirt... in some places that is "sexual harassment" or "assault". But if a woman asks a man, is it not just as rude?
Men just really do not care about fashion. Look at the men's department vs the women's department at any clothing store, whose is bigger? We want to look good but on the whole I do not think we are slaves to it.
But I have had no rude reactions either. Lots of staring and finger pointing, which could be considered rude in some circles. But I am comfortable, I am doing my own thing and hurtin no one.
Peace
Chris

Being an Englishman and living as I do so close to the Scottish borders, I've had comments from some folk who simply can't understand why a non-Scot would want to wear a kilt.
I've had a couple of 'What's with the kilt' comments as a result. I also had a 'What's with the skirt' comment at New Year. Before I could answer, this tough looking Scotsman who I was having a conversation with at the bar of our local pub jumped in and gave the guy a verbal dressing down. I bought him a double scotch for his effort and we've been allies ever since.
On the up side, I've been referred to as 'sexy' in my kilt by young attractive females who normally wouldn't give me a second look.
You can't win 'em all. One things for sure. I know of no one yet who has suffered any physical assault as a result of wearing a kilt - unless you know different!!!

Might be a true statement for most, but not for men in kilts! We can't seem to get enough talk about pleats, kilt hose, tartan ties, how to match colors, shoes, hats, fabrics, etc., etc., etc. Whats the first thing you do after you put on your kilt... You go stand in front of a mirror! Hmmm, how about a spin for the lassies... 8) What fashion?? The old kilt is something else, aint it?!

We're just a bunch of posers, really. We'll be plucking our nasal hair next.

Ow! No, that hurts too much! I have this nice handy electric trimmer you just shove up your nostril and it trims all the hairs. Works like a charm.

LOL. My grandfather told that some guy "insulted" him about his kilt once. Let me just lay emphasis on the word "once"......
I'm told by those who wear kilts quite a lot (I'm just getting into this whole wearing of the kilt thing myself), that most comments that are made are positive comments. They get things like, "Why don't more men wear those things?" and (from the ladies), "I wish my husband would wear one of those!" I would imagine those who spew forth negative comments are those who are not too confident in their manhood. It is said that a man in a kilt is a man and a half.

Tends to be wedding functions and parties when they're worn here.(Dundee) Where-as a City such as Edinburgh they can be seen on every other person, people from there don't need a reason to wear them. The place might be full of tourists, who feel right at home wearing a kilt or a tartan skirt for the duration of their visit. FANTASTIC !

I see kilts around here only in the local scottish shop, highland games, or special occasions. Other than that, it's me. And it would seem you do need a reason if you don't want to be labelled as an oddball. I don't even see that many tartan skirts in our area... which is too bad. I just melt when a lass is wearing a tartan skirt. Something in the blood, methinks perhaps.

Graham, I have had squirrels as pets for years, I think an animal that can sit up and eat using its hands has to be a step up from from a dog. No plans to make a sporran from them.
Regarding my login name, I have several fine specimens of glaucomys volans (genus sciuropterus) as pets.
