I would vote for a kilt in your family tartan. I am in a similar circumstance being a member of Clan Campbell, but my family is a sept. So I have both Campbell and a MacDiarmid kilts.

Yes, I really like the Leckie reproduction colors too, and have given it some serious thought. My first choice is a toss up between the repro colors and the "modern" colors. The red and green has been third on my list because while I'm not really a "green guy" I'd considered having it pleated to stripe so that it wasn't quit so green. I have a kilt in the MacGregor red, and green that has about the same amount of green in it.
Wearing an obscure tartan like the Leckie tartan would be interesting, but for some reason I kind of feel attracted to it, almost like Richard Dreyfuss was attracted to the mountain (volcano vent) in the movie "close encounters"...LOL...
When I was watching a youtube vid of the march up the tartan mile, in the group of Clan Gregor's, I saw some one in the crowd wearing the Leckie modern tartan.

Given that you already have 4 kilts in the Clan tartan ( MacGregor ) , I would agree on the Leckie family tartan .
I also understand your attraction to the Leckie Modern , it appeals to me as well .
Good luck on your decision , and .... I will see you at the mountain .

My two cents worth.
1. Since you already have four of our clan's tartans, why not look at the Leckie? Of course having the Red and Black in 16oz is also a nice choice.
2. & 3. I personally wouldn’t wear a 5 button matching waistcoat (same material as the PC) with a PC, but I would wear a 5 button bias cut tartan waistcoat with a PC or regulation doublet.
The late PM John Burgess is well put together with his waistcoat, as is our own Artificer wearing his 4 button waistcoat with a Black Barathea Argyll jacket.

4. While there may be a tartan that doesn’t work for a waistcoat cut on the bias, I haven’t seen one.
5. The importance of one tartan over another, is a personal decision.
It has been my experience, when you enjoy wearing something, it shows and you look good in it. Whatever your final choice ends up being, enjoy wearing it.
I look forward to seeing your finished kilt and waistcoat.

I know this isn't one of your listed options, but it's my best advice. The black and red MacGregor can be had from stock in a heavyweight fabric. I wouldn't go to the trouble of a custom weave for such a simple design.
Agreed. Along with Wilson's, you could also entertain the idea of having the MacGregor Clan tartan done up in the reproduction colours from D.C. Dalgliesh (see below). This particular sett would also look outstanding enlarged, as David stated. Whatever you decide, best of luck!

Good eye there! I hadn't noticed the crimson on those little CGI images.
On the Reproduction tartan it shows up as a dull mustard

I have a love for red/green tartans in Reproduction colours ever since, at a Highland Games, one of the firms had on display a mannequin wearing a kilt and bias-cut Sherrifmuir jacket in matching red/green Reproduction tartan (I don't remember the specific tartan). It was the most beautiful Evening Dress I'd ever seen!

I advise to go with one of your family tartans, because, as already stated in previous posts, you are already well equipped MacGregor-wise. Whatever you decide please let us know. There are far too many posts on here where people ask for advice and then that is the last we hear of it! Thanks.

I'm going to say that I consider the advice that I've received from this post as "sage" advice from you all.
Based on input and sound reasoning, I've decided that it's to be the 16 oz. family tartan an not 15 oz. Rob Roy (black and red). For family tartan choice I'm down to modern or reproduction. At this point they both appeal to me more than the red and green.
I'm kind of a kilted new-be, and have come to the conclusion that the tartan that you (I) may pick in your first year or two of kilting could easily be different than the tartan that you'd pick after you've been around a time and have "settled in", and our taste in highland dress (and tartans) have matured. When I look in my closet I can already see a "taste migration". This "taste migration,or maturation" looks to be based on when I purchased what, and what I now were, vs what I started wearing.
I've placed an order with a kilt maker for another (different) bias cut waist coat project, and while I was consulting with him about THAT order, it started the gears rolling on this additional project. For me it's always great to (kind of) "have one in the pipe" ,and one (or two or three) on the board.
I'm working with kilt maker Matthew Newsome, of New House Highland on this project, and my initial order with Matt is for a bias cut 5 button waist coat (in the MacGregor red and black 13 oz. Hedga material) that will go with one of my existing kilts. I'll be working with Matt on the Lackie family tartan kilt and bias cut waist coat as well.
I chose to take this initial projects construction time to figure what I wanted for my coup-de-grace kilt.
So, to date on the new project list, I'm going with a 5 button bias cut waistcoat, and for tartan it's going to be either the modern or the reproduction colors.......I'm kind of leaning towards the reproductions color about 53/47
Thanks again for all your help.

Stan: It seems to me that you've made some good decisions. Congratulations. Don't hesitate to change your mind should you have a change of heart, though. Just try to do it before you've "poured concrete", so to speak.
Generally, I like reproduction colors, too. They give the kilt a more outdoors/woodsy look to me. If you haven't already, you might talk with Matt about the possibility of a "hard tartan" finish on your kilt (and matching waistcoat, if you commission one). You can read about hard tartan at ...

I have one on my Douglas reproduction kilt, woven by Dalgliesh and sewn by Matt. I like it very much. It imparts a bit more rugged look and feel to the kilt without being coarse or scratchy.
While it's difficult to tell much about it from a picture, FYA I have attached two below.

Good luck, and show us pics some time.
