That's what is nice about living in Japan. Anytime someone questions the kilt I can explain it comparing it to traditional Japanese clothing. For example, if they say that they thought that kilts were only for bagpipe bands I say "Are kimono only for people playing the shamisen?" If they call my kilt a skirt, I tell them that is like calling a yukata a bathrobe.
    It's lots of fun.

This isn't necessesarily a bad thing... do you know how many times I had the cover charge waived at Irish bars b/c they thought I was in the band? Do you know how many free drinks I have gotten b/c bartenders thought I was in the band? It definitely has its perks...

I know exactly what you mean Rocky. It has happened to me more than once, and no I do not complain.

[quote]I said that I was not with the band and wear the kilt for comfort, she seemed perplexed as to what I was saying.

Hehehe, had a similar reaction by a store clerk. Went to the local Target (kinda like K-mart) and they had a stand set up inside the door for people to sign up for a Target credit card or guest card. The girl saw my Bear Kilt, and asked "Are you Scottish?" My reply was "Nope, American" She stops, and just get's this perplexed look on her face. Her next question was what school I went to. (Must have thought it was a school uniform, and mind you now, I'm obviously in my 30's) My girlfriend replys that it's not a school thing. The girl then looks at me and asks "is it a ... skirt?". "Nope, it's a kilt". I then proceeded to continue walking, my girlfriend shaking her head & muttering about morons. The poor girl still looked confused as we were walking away.

    Kilted Nomadd, WELCOME.

It's great to see and hear others reaction as to why the kilt is worn. People just don't get it. That's why I like this forum gives you great ideas as to how to respond to those who are unsure of us kilt wearers. BTW I love peoples' perplexed looks.
