So we marched in our first parade today! Thanks for all of the advice. It turned out that he was the smallest participant in the band (and among the smallest in the whole parade!) My son was the only one in his "junior band member" uniform.
He did great. He wore the Royal Navy style sweater with a white collared shirt, a Royal Stewart kilt (that we rented) and his kilt hose with black flashes and the combat boots laced up. He had his own sgian dugb in his sock. He had a glen garry hat and a sporran that matched the band's sporran.
He stood out from the rest of the uniformed marchers because he was in the sweater, but also because he was so young, and I heard people commenting, "look at that, they've got a young one!"
He just carried the flag of the band and he loved it. I think we were the only Scottish band in the St. Patrick's day Parade. The color guard carried the band's flag and St. Andrew's Saltaire. A rarity at an Irish parade.
Tomorrow we do it again, only this time, he'll be playing a tenor drum!
