Wow that's pretty nice - And I see they have Buchanan too...I'll show the missus that one for sure. It's especially nice that it's kind of one size fits all deal as she is currently on a "Lose weight" kick...She'd be more willing to order something expensive that wouldn't be useless if she succeeds at the weight-loss.

The scarves and shawls mentioned previously are also great ideas - thank you people!

At the very least you could get her a tartan rosette with a nice pin to place in the center. It could be worn with many outfits.

    Great pictures!

Do you happen to know where the tartan button-down shirts came from? I'd love to have some for non-kilted occasions.

We have been lucky enough to find Buchanan tartan shirts in L.L. Bean, Land's End, Orvis, and JC Penny among others. It is an odd year when at least one or more of these don't carry our tartan. And they do stock other tartans as well. Of course their summer wear is out now so you may have to wait until the fall catalog is on line.

I got my lass has a lightweight wool kilt-skirt in the Chinese-Scottish tartan, but she finds it a bit itchy. She got herself a kilt-skirt in Maple Leaf tartan poly-viscose ($5 at Value Village ) that is more comfortable for her.

My mom has a kilt-skirt in poly-viscose Black Watch and a wool sash in the Alberta tartan.

Both of them enjoy getting in on the fun for pub nights, Burns Suppers, etc.

    Thanks. I'll keep watch.

A couple of years ago I did stumble across a shirt in MacKenzie modern at Orvis (I believe), but it's that darned slick, "wrinkle free" fabric which draws in every spec of lint for miles. It's so unsightly I never wear it.

Hi HippieLee ! I haven't been the site for a bit, but I came across your post..My husband has been wanting me to wear skirts for a while and I never really found a style that I liked. Until one day I saw a lovely woman wearing a beautiful kilt that was from her grandmother.. She was my muse .. Ever since I saw her in one I had to get one my first was a Wallace Red Modern (light) I got in October 2013 then I got Spirit of Scotland (med) for xmas 2013 ... My Dark Shadow Island on Black Tartan (med) will be coming in a couple of wks.. I look very cute in my kilts.. they all have the apron which the fringe is on the right.. I wear a nice shirt/blouse/sweater/t-shirt.. with dr martens boots or clogs etc. I even have a few sporrans semi and formal.. I wear kilt pins too.. I love my kilts.. My husband loves them on me.. I have gotten many compliments.. I don't think I'm disrespecting the kilt... I'm looking forward to wearing my kilts this summer ..Planning on getting more too.. Bonnie Greene have done my wool kilts, she is on here too. I am a loyal customer she is an artist. I may get a few non wool kilts from USA KILTS I hear they are great too.. So I say more the merrier we may be starting a new trend either way we ALL Men/Women look great and we all have style.. I'm even going to get the Glegarry cap but solid black I believe.. Good luck .. Angie

    Hi Hippielee,
All the posted suggestions and photos are good ideas and in wonderful taste. In the years I have been studying Scottish fashions for women, the trend seems to be what ever the women in the rest of the western world are wearing. A tartan skirt, hostess skirt, shawl, plaid, scarf or cape are all great. The horror is when a woman insists on wearing a "tavern wench style" or regency style gown for games, parades, pub nights, etc. and they think they are "being Scottish." While they may have their place at some events, they are a costume. A kilt is NOT a costume. It is proud national dress should be treated with respect.

For the very latest in Scottish haute couture, just go to Scottish Field (available on line) and check out the society pages. For formal, is it an evening gown, often with the addition of a tartan sash, or shawl. For less formal wear, it is the tartan skirt, trews (if you are built like the lovely Mr. Jock Scot, and can look good in them), or a tartan accessory.

Sorry for the rant, but as National Secretary for Clan MacKenzie of the USA, I attend many Scottish and other Celtic events throughout the year, and some of the outfits just make me crazier than I already am.
