Very interesting and I can relate. Also, without getting political - notwithstanding my Jacobite Highland and minority Southern Irish heritage, I was raised Canadian and used to sing God Save the Queen as well as O Canada in school each morning.

More importantly, I swore an oath to Her Majesty when I joined the Canadian Forces. So regardless of any personal views, an oath I swore, so an oath I shall keep.

I do hope Her Royal Highness had a very happy birthday and that she is blessed with the health and longevity of her mother.

I swore similar oaths to HM as an Air Cadet and Scout in Scotland, and had qualms about becoming a US citizen for that very reason, so I asked HM Consul-General in Boston (who happened to be a personal friend through the Boston Glasgow University Alumni Club) and he told me that HMG had no problem with people like me swearing an oath to the United States, which in no way negates my status as a UK citizen where HMG is concerned. Equally the US doesn't officially recognise dual nationality but the new citizens at my citizenship ceremony were encouraged (by USBCIS) to retain their country of origin passports if allowed to do so by their country of origin.

Just to muddy the waters entirely:

From 1953 to 1956, the Queen's birthday was celebrated in Canada on Victoria Day, by proclamation of the Governor General, with Her Majesty's approval. In 1957, Victoria Day was permanently appointed as the Queen's birthday in Canada.

It may be April 21st, but to Canadians it will always be May 24th.

The Queen has two birthdays - an actual one as per 21st April and an official one which can be different dates in her various realms.

Here is it a slightly moveable feast in June and celebrated with the Trooping of the Colour.

May 24th is the actual date of the birth of Queen Victoria back in 1819.

Yes this is why I understand we celebrate the Queen's birthday here in Canada on May 24th. It used to be practice to celebrate on the actual date of birth but Victoria reighned so long that people got very used to the May24th date. Additionally that is typically a glorious time of year here with spring in full bloom and the risk of frost almost past that people really enjoyed the holiday at that time. It was therefore decided that we would celebrate the birthday of all future Monarchs on the 24th of May and the now famous "24 Weekend" was born.

See, one learns things on this forum. I didn't know Victoria Day was also the celebration of EIIR's birthday in Canada. I just thought we were celebrating Queen Victoria because of the important role she played in our Nation's birth. Thanks John et al.

We shouldn't allow little considerations like the weather to affect decisions regarding celebrations singlemalt!

Next year Her Majesty will beat Victoria's record and that might create the need to reconsider the issue.

The specialists will be along presently to verify, but I'm not sure that "Her Royal Majesty" actually exists as a title/name/rank/salutation? The lady is Her Majesty and Her Majesty is Royal but I would be surprised if they were ever supposed to be said at the same time?

It sounds a bit strange to my ear also. I'm used to either "Her Majesty" or "Her Royal Highness".

Pet peeve: When people here refer to her as the "Queen of England". While she is that, she is also "the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" and more importantly for my purposes here, she is "the Queen of Canada" and that is her official title on these shores.

She has lots of titles, realms, dominions etc... I just think Canadians should know her official title here.
