Yes Old Stewart is a beautiful tartan.

Here is Prince Charles wearing it in Ancient Colours

I have a casual acrylic Hunting Stewart, which has featured a few times on here. The best thing I can say for it is that my wife much prefers it to my similar Royal Stewart.

If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

You know, I haven't paid much attention to the Stewart of Appin tartans, but that one looks really cool. I have steered my eyes to the Stewart tartans because they are universal and it's my family link to Scotland. My father was a Stewart and there are McDonalds on his side as well, however distant. It's all in my head for sure, but Stewart of Appin seems a bit more exclusive. Then again, I'm not Royalty either.

    Nice cheese there too. lol

I have to say that the picture on the left of you helping that lassie put her sweater (or jumper) on is very helpful.

It's caused me to, ahem, adjust my kilt, ahem, preferences.

LOL, Just Hugh…I was thinking the same thing. I know I started this about wanting a kilt but I should be asking "tpa" where I can get one of those.

I have kilts in Royal Stewart, Black Stewart and Hunting Stewart Modern, and would love to have one of the Ancient patterns. The patterns are so distinctive, versatile and appropriate for so many different occasions. I absolutely love them all, as does Della, my Bichon Frise:

KC , the Stewart Hunting Muted tartan is also very handsome and more subdued . A friend of mine who is also an XMarks member is having a kilt made in this tartan .

He showed me the fabric first hand before shipping it to the kilt maker and it was absolutely beautiful .

Here's a pic from my phone of the swatch that doesn't do it justice , but it will give you some idea . Sadly , I didn't get a pic of the 8 yds of fabric .

This fabric is from Strathmore Mills .

One thing to keep in mind , if you are going with any of the versions of the Stewart Hunting tartan , you will need to make sure that you are ordering it in single width for " kilt making " . Stewart Hunting is an asymmetrical tartan pattern and ordering in a single width is important when it's an asymmetrical tartan .

Most tartans are not asymmetrical but some are , thus they need to be made from a run of single width of 8 yds for " kilt making " as opposed to a 4 yd run of double width fabric ( which is the most common ) that can be split and made into 8 yds .

If you are ordering everything from a kilt maker , then no worries , they will know how to handle it . My info above only applies if you are ordering the fabric yourself and shipping it to a kilt maker .

I hope that I didn't add any confusion and I'm not trying to be an expert ( because I'm certainly not ) , just wanted to share some information about the range of Stewart Hunting tartans ... just in case you were going to order the fabric yourself .

Best wishes on selecting your Stewart tartan , there are quite a few !

    Cheers , Mike

I know what you mean, it's one of the lesser known/ used tartans, though I quite like it haha , and thankyou, if you like I'll get a picture in better lighting and ahh, I see if memory serves McDonald lands weren't too distant from Stewart of Appin lands, so it could be possible that you're a Stewart of Appin, but I'm no great historian so I wouldn't quote me on that one :P maybe one of our fellow rabblemen could help confirm?

And haha I try :P it was wear something tartan day for work, and, well I'm not one to miss a chance to kilt up

Your dog looks really cool in her kilt. She even has her own white hose!
A version of Royal Stewart that I really like is Prince Charles Edward Stuart, and if you don't like bright scarlet Marton Mills do a lovely darker red version.
